Sandisk rejects Samsung’s takeover bid

September 17th, 2008

Another hostile takeover attempt in the tech arena! Samsung recently offered to buyout memory major Sandisk for $5.8 5bln, however the Sandisk BOD had different plans. While Samsung leads the world production of Flash memory, Sandisk is the largest assembler of Memory Cards using these NANA Flash memory chips. It doesn’t take a genius to realise that both these powers combined would be a strong entity; enough to attract antitrust issues…

“We believe Samsung’s proposal does not provide appropriate value to our stockholders and is opportunistically timed at the trough of an industry-wide downturn, ” SanDisk Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Eli Harari said.

An acquisition would benefit Samsung as it would gain patents for flash-memory-chip technology that cost the Korean company about $400 million in royalty payments annually, Citigroup’s Kim said [source]

Top NAND Flash chip makers:

1. Samsung 42.3% (of global production)
2. Toshiba 27.5%
3. Hynix 13.4%

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 delayed?

September 1st, 2008

http://www.onlygizmos.com/images/libraryxperia2.jpg

Sony Ericsson Xperia is expected to be the savior for Sony Ericsson much like the Alexander is expected for Motorola. But the Xperia X1 launch seems to be toubled. Stated to be SE’s firsts Windows Mobile (being manufactuered by HTC) the X1 could rescue SE into the highly competitive smartphone market.

But news is coming out that Sony Ericsson is facing trouble with Windows Mobile 6.1 that is powering the Xperia. As seen in the demo video earlier, the Xperia X1 has a customized home screen which differentiates it form conventional WM smartphones.

Multiple demo units at IFA have either crashed or failed entirely, according to the report.
