$35 Android tablet set for Jan launch


The $35 Android tablet has been in news ever since it was first spoken of. Once termed as impossible and vaporware, its prototype amazed many. After being dismissed multiple times by many tech pundits, the $35 Android tablet is finally undergoing mass production. The Indian government has announced that it has awarded the production contract of the tablet to HCL Technologies. The first batch of this tablet is expected to be available from 10th of Jan, 2011.


The initial phases would see only the 7″ tablet whose prototype was displayed. Later phases would also see the 9″ and 5″ versions rolling out. No mention of the pricing / contract amount of this tablet was made during this announcement. Also, its unknown weather its price would be further reduced to $10, as promised by the Indian government and how much subsidy is provided to achieve the $35 target.
