5 cool features in Wordpress 2.9

Wordpress v2.9 is out and it adds some really useful features to the already ubercool platform. Each time wordpress gets new features, its like my wishlist shrinking. So here is what I really love about Wordpress 2.9:
- Image optimizer: Any blogger who has had tried to optimize his site for loading quickly would tell you how important it is to optimize images. I often find myself editing images in Photoshop and shedding the extra weight that they carry. Apart from this cropping, rotating, flip etc are also needed once in a while. Guess what – Wordpress 2.9 has this feature built right in! However this doesn’t completely eliminate the need for other photo editors on my desktop.
- Embedd using Oembed: Every embedded a YouTube video to your wordpress? Yes Wordpress has realised the pain of playing with embedd codes. So here comes the easy Oembed support that works for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv. Keith has a tutorial on how that works.
- Undo Delete: Love the undo button in Gmail that lets you revert almost anything that you do? Well here is a undo for Wordpress now, that lets you recover accidentally deleted posts or comments. Simple, sweet
- Thumbnail support: “Themes can register ‘post thumbnails’ which allow them to attach an image to the post, especially useful for magazine-style themes.” This integrated something that magazine themes do with a javescript slowing down the site and often breaking things!
- Batch plugin updates: Updating multiple plugins in one go is now just a click away. Compatibility check thrown in the mix aswell.
All in all WP 2.9 looks is a good support for power bloggers. Image optimization, thumbnail support for magazine themes and batch plugin update is something the big boys would really love. Some of the challenges in recruiting new interns for a blog are taken care of with the easy embedding and inbuilt image optimization. Hope some good video tutorials would make its way to YouTube soon

Great breakdown on WordPress 2.9. I agree, back up your stuff and get 2.9.1 when it becomes available. WP 2.9 is a solid update, but am still looking for more in WordPress 3.0. Here’s my thoughts on the newest version of WordPress.
