Just when we thought the tariff war among GSM providers in India had peaked with Tata DoCoMo announcing the pay-per-character Diet-SMS Scheme, we were left pleasantly surprised when the same company took the price war to a whole new level by announcing a “Timed SMS” scheme. What it means is that users type an SMS right now and provide a later date and time, when that SMS will actually be sent to the recipient.
As a natural response to this, Airtel has come out with a similar service of its own, called the “Timer SMS”. Here are the formats for you.
Tata DoCoMo :
Type TSMS <Recipient Mobile Number> <Time in HHMM> <Date in DDMM> <Message> and send it to 53030. (Example: TSMS 90430000xx 0815 2407 Happy Birthday)
Airtel :
Type <Recipient mobile number> Date <DDMM> Time <HHMM> <YOUR Message> to 52233. (Example: 9810098100 0801 0000 Happy Birthday)
This time, Airtel has gone a step ahead of its rival Indo-Japanese provider while pricing this service. Both the services are near about the same, with a major difference being in the pricing of it. TataDoCoMo charges Rs.3 for a pre-scheduled SMS, while Airtel’s “Timer SMS” charges you Rs.1 for the same.
And not just that, Airtel also allows you to cancel your pre-scheduled SMS (in case you changed your mind). To do that, send STOP to your own number and cancellation instructions will follow. Airtel also sends you a correction message if you scheduled a message for date / time that is already past. Another advantage of Airtel’s service over that of Tata DoCoMo is that “Timed SMS” includes extra 5 characters (‘TSMS’) in the message, whereas Airtel’s “Timer SMS” does not add any such extra characters.
Interesting innovation happening over SMS in India; hopefully we will see these services become more internet based and smartphone powered in the future.
