Anti-Piracy: YouTube Video ID Live!
April 13th, 2008 by Annkur

We heard of the YouTube Video Fingerprinting technology last year. And it seems the same has gone live now, pirates beware! The system requires the content owners to submit a copy of their work to YouTube. The Video ID tool uses portions (Audio / Video) from these sample Videos and matches them with the user posted content to determine copyright violations! To me it sounds somewhat like the VeRo program of eBay. However the differentiation here is that, incase of eBay the content owners need to point out the violations on the site themselves.
For Internet Giants like YouTube, eBay etc it has always been difficult to tackle user generated/posted content. Community watch works to an extent, but here we now see the emergence of next-gen technology to handle the situation better. While many other video services have been lenient on adult materials posted, YouTube has been very strict and committed to provide a honest platform. This Video ID system from YouTube reinstates my faith on the site management even more!
