Apple has updated iTunes to version 8.2.1 and fixed “important bugs”. Apple’s latest update of iTunes has blocked the Palm Pre sync. Which means the Palm users would no longer be able to download music from iTunes. A spokesperson from Apple has confirmed this, calling the iTunes-Palm Pre sync a ‘bug’ in the previous versions of iTunes.

“iTunes 8.2.1 is a free software update that provides a number of important bug fixes,” says Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. “It also disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre. As we’ve said before, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with unsupported digital media players.”

The two companies have been going through some issues over touch technology. The action would definitely cause some inconvenience to the Palm Pre users who might have their music on iTunes. Still, there are many other options to the Palm users to get their music on the Pre. Along with the USB transfer and third party downloads, the Pre users also have an option not to upgrade the iTunes.

Palm spokeswoman Lynn Fox said, “Palm’s media sync works with iTunes 8.2. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we can consider.”

Pre being the closest competitor to iPhone, Palm would have already prepared for this. A counter action could be expected soon. We’ll keep you updated.
