Archos Announces ChildPad; Android Powered Tablet for Kids

Archos has just announced a new 7 inch Android powered tablet that has been designed for children. Known as the “ChildPad”, the tablet is a lightweight, funky looking device that packs in some potent firepower behind that innocuous looking shell.

To start with, the tablet has a 7 inch display – which we presume is just the right size for the target audience this tablet is looking to dominate. Under the skin, powering the device is a 1Ghz processor which is mated with 1 Gb of RAM ensuring that the device doesn’t lag. If this wasn’t all, the device would run Android 4.0, the latest version of Android.

As expected, the Childpad would come loaded with a bunch of kid specific applications including games like Angry Birds, Pig Rush and Flight Frenzy – apart from direct access to an app store that is loaded with Apps designed for kids. This App Store is fairly extensive and has as many as 14 categories from where these tiny tablet users can download applications from. As of now, this app repository boasts of 10,000 apps and includes games, books, comics and educational stuff.

The tablet also gets a kid friendly, heavily customized UI complete with colored, funky icons, home screen folders and direct access to games.

The tablet is fully compliant with CIPA and COPPA regulations thereby making it child friendly – even when the device is used to browse the Internet. There is also a comprehensive parental control application powered by Editions Profil.

The ChildPad would be made available by the end of arch 2012 and would cost $129 – which we bet is great value for money for a 7 inch ICS powered device!
