Barnes & Nobles have announced the launch of its e-bookstore on Monday. The e-bookstore would provide online books which can be read on iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry phones and also on notebooks and netbooks. Following success of online book stores and platforms, Barnes & Nobles  believes that the number of customers considering the electronic media for reading books is increasing.

Diverting from the Kindle model of Amazon.com, Barnes & Nobles would be providing e-books that can be read on many more platforms than just their e-book reader. The e-book store by Barnes & Nobles would be the “World’s Largest eBookstore” with 700,000 e-books to be offered at a price point of $9.99.

Barnes & Nobles targets to reach 1 million titles during the first year. Apart from the retail titles, the company would also be offering some 500,000 public domain books including classics that are hard to find. That makes about half-a-million e-books to be read for free.

“As America’s #1 bookstore and newsstand, our goal at Barnes & Noble is to build a service that revolves around the customer, enabling them to have access to hundreds of thousands of titles and read on their smartphone, PC and many other existing and future devices,” said William J. Lynch, President, Barnes & Noble.

“We want to make eBook simple, accessible, affordable and convenient for everyone,” he added in an official statement.

The company would also be coming up with a eReader which would be released next year. The e-books from Barnes & Noble would not be compatible with Amazon’s Kindle or Sony Corp.’s proprietary reader device.
