BlackBerry Services Go Down On Freaky Friday

Beleaguered smartphone maker BlackBerry who is trying hard to make a comeback with its newly launched Z10 smartphone faced its first major technical hurdle yesterday when its famed services faced an outage for a few hours. The outage first started off from India and was later seen to be far more widespread than initially thought. There were reports even from BlackBerry’s own home turf Canada where people complained about services going down.

BlackBerry on its part confirmed that services were indeed down – but added that they were working to restore the same. “Some of our customers may be experiencing issues with BlackBerry services. All relevant support teams are working to resolve the issue. We apologize to any customers who may be affected,” the company acknowledged after people started tweeting about the outage on Twitter.

This outage has come after quite some time, though. The last major outage with Blackberry services was seen back in October 2011 that affected its customers worldwide. All said, this new outage couldn’t have come at a worse time for BlackBerry which is trying hard to pry back in to relevance after being trounced on the market share front by both Android and iOS. Its new BlackBerry OS 10 based devices have been doing decent sales and an outage would only add to peoples doubts regarding the reliability of their services. Thankfully for BlackBerry, it still has a huge fan following and a bunch of dedicated fanboys still swear by devices made by them. It would be interesting to see if BlackBery would be able to continue holding them back and prevent them from migrating to other platforms.
