Cashing in on the tablets rush we are seeing this year, here is another entrant from Malaysia. Costing $680 the Ezy tablet features Windows 7, multitouch magic, USB ports, 250GB HDD, 3G and 2GB RAM.
No ground breaking form factor but this one manages to house even a RJ45 network port with a total weight of 1.0 Kg. No huge brand name of controversy like the JooJoo, it won’t be very easy for the Ezy to market themselves in the US markets IMO. However given the

Asus has outed a number of gadgets at CeBIT 2010 and here are two of the EEE PC models showcased there. The EEE PC 1001PQ and 1201PN throws new life to the Eee line up. While the 1001PQ is a kids system (with games and kids friendly browser), the 1201PN sports a sleek design, larger screen, Intel’s Pineview series Atom CPU and HD capabilities.

Dell had previously shown its rumored tablet device to only a few lucky journos at CES this year. Now, Mr. Neeraj Choubey, the company’s GM of tablets division, has told Wired.com that Dell Mini 5 won’t be a single tablet PC, instead a family of tablets varying in sizes, along with other advances over iPad which will help in truly creating a separate category of tablet PCs. We really hope they see value in adding a sliding QWERTY to the design.
Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Inc., says that the Mini 5 will debut “in a couple of months” and will run on Android (2.0 or higher).

After the technology showcase and launches we saw at CES and MWC, ceBIT (Germany) is knocking on the door. Amongst the plenty of notebooks that we expect to be shown at ceBIT, it seems that the Asus refresh of the EEE PC lineup has leaked out. Three new models 1015P, 1016P and 1018P are being reported by Akihabara news.
All of these models are expected to feature 10″ screen and some enticing details like aluminum body, fingerprint recognition, 14 hour battery life and USB 3.0 are being promised in these netbooks. Asus sure is looking forward to give Acer a tough run in this segment, however no word on what OS these would be running (though best bet is Windows 7).

While the me-too rush for the tablets is expected to hit the hardware industry soon (we already have Lenovo Ideapad U1 and Asus EEE Pad confirmed), Acer is apparently steering away from the iPad style concept. Acer Taiwan president Scott Lin has made it clear that while its no challenge for Acer to build an iPad like device, they do not see it as a fit for their business model. Instead Acer is concentrating on rolling out its own ultrathin notebooks in 2010. Lin does make a valid point saying that Apple has carved its own niche with a business model around it and other players are unlikely to replicate the same result by copying Apple. However you know what Apple did to the smartphone industry!
Being the current leader in the netbooks market, Acer surely is at the risk of losing business if the Apple iPad really takes off. However Lin feels that both these products target a different usergroup. Fundamentally if you see what the netbook is, I feel the iPad is a direct competition to the concept of netbooks.

Ideapad, Eee Pad, iPad … the tablets are suddenly buzzing in numbers. And an amusing fact that everyone has a similar name. Wonder why this love for the suffix Pad. Anyways earlier rumored and now confirmed, the Asus Eee Pad (as revealed by Asus Corporate VP Eric Chen) is powered by an ARM CPU and is 3G capable. And that’s not all we hear, the exec further goes on to say that Asus has taken keen interest in developing the UI for its tablet and we can expect some good innovative interface.

No info on what operating system Asus is playing with, but Android and Windows 7 are the rumored ones. But if they are customizing it significantly, (more…)

Acer already expressed their ambition to be the first PC maker to launch a Chrome OS netbook. Now Acer’s President of IT productions Unit, Jim Wong confirmed it to Bloomberg, while adding that the company is also planning to launch its own e-reader & App Store by mid-2010.
Acer profits surged, after it sold around 10 million netbooks last year (a dual-boot netbook from Acer bombed didn’t see any great laptop reviews though). After launch of its first Chrome netbook Q3 2010, the company plans to power at least 10% of its netbooks with Chrome. Wong said that the company wants to bring about a change in Intel + Windows dominated market and are aggressively working towards being one of the first to launch Chrome netbooks. However, he declined to state whether or not these new netbooks will run on Intel’s chips.
Acer’s App Store was also speculated earlier; Wong finally made it official saying that it will feature “hundreds” of free/low-cost apps for netbooks. The app store will support Android and Windows (and WinMobile) OS, while support for Chrome itself will be added later. This certainly promises to be a rival to the App store that Intel is cooking up (Appup).
Acer also plans to jump onto e-reader (more…)

Intel certainly looks to prove Moore’s Law right with its bunch of announcements at CES 2010. The company’s CEO Paul Otellini made some big announcements during his keynote.
Here we summarize it for you :
- Intel’s AppUp Center is an app store with software’s / games made for Netbooks (just as we heard earlier). Currently in Beta, it works on Windows and Mobilin (mobile Linux). Also, the company is associating itself with Acer, Asus, Dell, and Samsung to create manufacturer-specific apps for their laptops. Developers will be linked via Atom Developer Program. The company says AppUp Store is focused at the netbook-centric Atom processor.
- Moresetown an Atom-based, Mobilin-driven smart phone made by LG, that brings multipoint, 3-way split-screen video-conferencing on the device itself.
- LightPeak (the Apple backed technology): a single-cable 10Gbps standard that enables the download of a Blu-ray movie in less than 30 seconds. That’s faster than even USB 3.0. Intel aims to provide computing and transfer power for 3D content in homes, including making your own 3D movies at home.
- A holographic glass digital display that can “digitally visually tag actual physical objects sitting behind it.” What Visual Tagging means (more…)

Samsung has gone official with new netbooks lineup that would be powered by the all new Intel Pine Trail CPU’s. The Atom PineTrail CPU puts the GPU and Memory along with the CPU on the same die, shrinking the no of chips to just two (from the three earlier). Not getting to technical, this in plain language means better efficiency and lower cost.
While Samsung will make us wait for the upcoming CES before revealing exact specifications and pricing details, the four models coming up are N210, N220, N150 and NB30. All of these sport a 10.1″ LED backlit display and resolution upto 1024×768 can be achieved with some software magic. The NB30 is expected to be the high-end version of the low with ruff-n-tuff features like water tight seal and HDD sensor to handle drops.
2010 will surely see a lot of next-gen netbooks, look out for Nvidia’s Ion based netbooks, that promise better performance than the Intel Atom.

At first thought it seemed as if it makes sense and a few minutes into the news that Intel is preparing its own App Store for netbooks, it seems as if the iPhone App Store success has influenced the tech industry way too badly. While many players are working on their own OS and almost everyone from Acer to Samsung are jumping on the app market. Service providers like Vodafone have also jumped on this wagon. So is the apps model so strong that it would rule netbooks awell? Does it add value? aren’t there enough free Google apps that are browser based? and isn’t the FREE Chromium OS already in works?
Intel is looking at the same business model that Apple does for the AppStore, passing on 70% of the revenues to the developers. The apps would be compatible with Intel’s upcoming OS Moblin and/or Windows 7. In my opinion the iPhone targets the power users and will continue to see the App Store boom, but netbooks is a different segment altogether. There may be some traction with this, but don’t expect this to be a billion downloads App Store anytime soon

Views may differ on this, but if you see it from my eyes the mind games over Chromium have begun. After Dell’s attempt to show its friendly side to Chrome OS with a supported version officially available to play with (for the Mini 10v), Acer has now responded with a claim to Digitimes that they would be the first netbook maker to feature Chrome OS in the second half of 2010.
While Dell wasn’t a part of the official partner list that Google released for Chrome OS development, the computer manufacturer scored an early win by cashing in on the Google OS hype. A beta to play with is good enough to create buzz and please the geeks. But now Acer, after having its hands partly burnt with Android, is hoping to score big with Chrome OS. All the best folks, just deliver us some cool tech
Wonder: Will Acer launch a Windows 7 / Chrome OS dual boot netbook ?

Dell is cashing in on the hype around Google’s Chrome OS which promises to change the way we look at netbooks. While there is still time for the official version of Chrome OS (expected in 2H 2010), Dell has made available a compatible version for its Mini 10v netbook users.
The 10v compatible version is available for download here (instructions here). Though no virtual OS installation/support is available Chrome OS, you can load the 8GB image file on a USB to get this working. The users must be cautious though as this OS has gone through minimal testing and might bring in some issues. The WiFi connectivity is one of the features which can be troublesome.
While Acer decided to go with Android, Dell after playing with Ubuntu and Android is finally putting some weight behind the Chrome OS.

Netbooks has in a way acted as a catalyst in taking the notebook format to the masses. And Taiwan is seeing extraordinary growth with this form of PC. Digitimes reports that nebooks have a 40% market share in portable computers in the first three quarters of 2009 in Taiwan compared to the global average of 20%.
The effect of low ticket size of the netbook would certainly reflect in the bottom-line of PC makers, but the alternative revenue model with 3G powered netbooks sold a monthly subscription might help bring in some more revenues. Surprisingly in markets like India and China the adoption is low with approx share of 16% (and less than 10% in Q3). I would normally expect India and China to sell more of these netbook which is targeted at the masses. Probably the difference of just around INR 5000 ($100) between a good netbook and a entry level explains the situation. Throwing the Google Chrome OS in the mix and many new models coming in 2010, the netbook space would be interesting to watch!

Nokia’s Booklet 3G did manage to excite us quite a bit until they revealed the pricing
. Today at the Nokia World 09, journalists from across the globe tested out the Nokia netbook. However, the bigger bomb that Nokia dropped was the pricing – approximately US$810, which translates to some Rs 40,000 in India. With the best of netbooks retailing for around Rs 20,000, I am sure that the Booklet 3G isn’t targeted at Nokia’s stronghold economies in Asia. Instead, it appeared that the product could possibly be set up to help the company to penetrate the US and UK markets.
It has been clarified that the Booklet 3G will be subsidized by carriers across the globe. But the fact that both carrier subsidy and 3G network will not be a reality in India anytime soon, us gizmo fans unfortunately will have to give this beautiful (and now expensive) gadget a miss, much against the original plan.
Apart from the pricing, the Nokia Booklet 3G does have an interesting set of (more…)

Just days after we digested the Nokia N900 that was considered to be its portable internet tablet, here comes Nokia’s official netbook entry. Rumors of a Nokia netbook were going around since long, but we didn’t expect it to come out with something full fledged so soon. Booklet 3G as they term it, this mini laptop looks a little more empowered than your regular netbook and has a 10.1″ display and Windows OS (rumored to be Windows 7). Nokia has just released a teaser (video below) for us to drool over without revealing specifications in particular. However the device looks good, full featured (yeah HDMI, GPS, 3G etc) and compact enough. Loads of Nokia customizations / integration can also be expected.

The most exciting part such as the pricing and availability isn’t revealed, it might well hit the streets sometime in October-December to encash the holiday season along with the Windows 7 official launch. This is one netbook that I would certainly consider, but only if it can match the pricing. Something below $500 would be great! (video downstairs)
