Facebook app for Zune HD goes live

March 2nd, 2010

If there is one winner that Microsoft has rolled out in the handheld space, its the Zune HD. Going live against the iPod touch 3G last year, the Zune HD did do a fair enough job. The design & UI were impressive and multitouch came in just on time. Now there is one social networking player who has leveraged the smartphone boom to its advantage pretty well and thats Facebook. Right form the impressive iPhone app to the Palm WebOS, they have taken the trouble to optimize FB for mobile more than anyone else. And it comes as little surprise to us that they have now gone live with the Facebook app on Zune HD. Zune HD users, do let us know whats your opinion on the same!

Samsung’s new TicToc player uses shake to skip tracks

February 11th, 2010

By the first looks of it,I thought this was some new nail polish bottle. After taking a closer look at it I realised that this ones got a wired tail and it is a digital music player. Now Samsung has introduced the new TicToc player that does all the functions of an MP3 player with just a single button and an accelerometer. The player has no display and is as sleek as its closest compeditor – the iPod Shuffle.

The device has a smart accelerometer sensor that changes track. A slow shake would line-up a slow song while a vigorous shake would play a fast one. The only key on the player acts as both the power button and the volume control key. Holding the player upside down with the key pressed reduces the volume and vice versa. (more…)

Portable consoles: After PSP vs DS, is it now iPod vs Zune?

September 20th, 2009

Zune HD vs iPod touch

Zune HD vs iPod touch

When Microsoft announced that its Zune HD multimedia player could play 3D games and released details of some of the titles that would be available on it in the coming days, the big company from Redmond added a new chapter to the battle for portable gaming. Although this has so far been a largely Sony vs Nintendo affair, with special appearances from other players, there are now indications that two of tech’s oldest rivals are getting ready to make portable gaming the arena for their next slugfest. Aye, after going at each other on computers, phones and media players, those two old buddies, Apple and Microsoft are likely to be slugging it out on gaming next.

There will be those who will snigger at such a notion, but given the way in which the iPod touch has emerged as a viable gaming device in its own right (heck, I think it offers much more bang for your gaming buck than the DS or the PSP), it would be foolish to write off the Zune’s prospects in this regard. Mind you, the force right now does seem to be with the iPod – the App Store right now has thousands of games, many of which are free, while the Zune is just starting out in this department. But that is likely to change in the coming days – even the App Store started out small, remember?

We can feel the frowns in the Sony and Nintendo camps already.

Fifth generation iPod nano has a camera

September 10th, 2009

ipod_nano_apple_event

Apple’s music event brought an exciting upgrade to the iPod Nano. Rumors of there being an iPod with a camera had the brightest of the iStreet befuddled much before the event was announced. But as always, Apple still manages to bring in a few surprises.

The camera came, but to the iPod nano (not the iPod Touch) as most of the rumors had predicted. Interestingly, the iPod nano has more than just the camera update. The ever slim-o nano now proudly displays an FM radio, a voice recorder and a pedometer as well.

The camera can take pictures and videos that can also be uploaded to YouTube at a single click. This upload can be done after the iPod has synced with your computer.

The FM radio performs as a normal FM radio should, save for a couple of very sweet details: (more…)

Apple ‘Its only rock n Roll’ iPod nano gets camera, no new iPod touch and more!

September 10th, 2009

rock-n-roll

Apple today announced a refresh to its iPods lineup, released iTunes 9 and killed all rumors for an Apple Tablet / Netbook and iPod touch with camera. The iPod nano got a video camera but the iPod touch didn’t get the microphone or camera. While this might well be a result of the technical snag rumors that claim that the iPod touch 3G was delayed due to some technical issues, I strongly feel that the camera iPod touch wouldn’t come so early as Apple would prefer to have a good difference between an iPod and the iPhone!

Here are the highlights of the event, detailed coverage coming soon. Also watch @ iPhoneHelp

  • iTouch OS 3.1 released
  • iPod touch becomes 50% faster, better games, 64GB version, no camera!
  • No HD, but better gaming support for iTouch with OpenGL|ES 2.0
  • iPod classic gets a bump to 160GB
  • iPod nano 5G gets a camera, voice recorder and FM
  • New iPod Shuffle in new colours :)
  • App Store gets genius support. Suggests apps based on your liking
  • 1.8bln apps sold, 75k apps live on AppStore
  • 30 million iPhones sold till date, 20 million iPod Touch
  • iTunes 9 released
