Show us the Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson!

March 11th, 2010

As this is Oscar week, we will just start this post with an instance from Jerry Maguire in which football star Rod Tidwell tells his agent Jerry Maguireto shut up and “show him the money!” Well, we can understand how he felt after hearing Sony Ericsson make YET another  comment about the Xperia X10. We first heard of the Android-driven device in early November when we were told it would be available in Q1 2010. At the recent MWC in Barcelona, we were shown Mini and Mini Pro versions of the device and told it would be coming a bit later.

And NOW we have a Sony Ericsson spokesperson telling CNET that it could come in the second half of the year with a new version of Android. Honestly, we were very impressed by the specs of the X10 (a 8.1 MP shooter, 4.0 inch touchscreen, and every connectivity option in town) but the inordinate delay in its arrival is really making us wonder if like the original Xperia, it would be actually outdated by the time it arrived. It must be one of the few smartphones in cellphone history to have three different avatars, none of which happen to be in the market.

So allow us to paraphrase Rod Tidwell and say, “Enough talk, Sony E. Show us the X10 in the market. Please!”

Did iSuppli just predict 64GB iPhone in 2010?

February 22nd, 2010

Its a routine report every year to predict that Apple products would strain NAND flash memory supplies. Ever since the iPod was a hit, Apple has become a major consumer of NANA flash memory and the demand from Apple has only increased with the success of the iPhone in recent years. So just as I looked to jump over the title of this Digitimes report that reads ‘iPhone to strain NAND flash supply for 2010, says iSuppli’; something hit my eye – An average of 35.2GB of NAND will be used in each iPhone sold in 2010.

Now how can that be possible with the iPhone 3GS only being available in 16GB & 32GB variants? Certainly this points towards the iPhone 4th Gen having a 64GB (or more?) capacity. Though I might be wrong with iPod touch already being available in 64GB variant and iSuppli might well have bundled iPod touch under the iPhone term, you never know what really rolls out these analyst estimates!

Is this Nokia N98 QWERTY slider?

February 11th, 2010

If the ‘internal’ sources of BeGeek are to be believed, the phone in the picture above is Nokia’s N98. The rumored specifications include a 4″ touchscreen, 32GB of internal storage and a slide-out QWERTY. The picture also suggests an OS looking similar to Symbian S60. As the design and model number would suggest to you, this is a N97 successor and we just hope that Nokia has had its learning’s from the N97. The phone also has a leaked price tag – €450 ($619). The phone is expected to be released during the holiday season of 2010 and rumored to be announced during the Mobile World Congress. But seeing Nokia’s low interest in the MWC 2010, we hardly see this happening.

Motorola Motosplit: Multi-slide touchscreen QWERTY?

February 8th, 2010

When it comes to design, Motorola is coming out with something entirely new and impressive these days. After a backwords flipping QWERTY with the Motorola Backflip, here comes multiple orientation keyboard phone — Motosplit. The rumored Motosplit is expected to have a unique form-factor, according to the leaked design image shown above. The phone is rumored to be featuring a multi-sliding keyboard. The keyboard can be a numeric keypad as well as a full QWERTY because it uses touch sensitive monochrome displays for keys.

The cut-outs for the ‘touch-keys’ match the counter of a standard finger to make typing easier. The key label would change according to the slide layout in use. The keyboard can be slide downwards for use as a standard numerical keypad and can also slide sideways to be used as QWERTY in landscape mode.

Other rumored specifications include a screen-size same as that of the Motorola Droid (3.7“, 480 x 854) and a snapdragon 1GHz processor. The phone is expected to be official in Q3 2010.

Mid-range Nokia smartphone leaks out (C series)

February 4th, 2010

A close look at the Nokia’s product lineup would surely suggest a broken link between the low-end phones and the high-end N-series/E-series. If the speculations of a handset called C5 are to be true, then Nokia might just be filling this broken link with a new C-series. C5 is the first leaked handset of the new rumored C-series. C5 would be a mid-range Nokia smartphone which should fit perfect into the price sensitive pockets. The phone seems to be running Symbian S60 v3 & the shortcuts / widgets on the homescreen reminds us of the 5233 UI we saw earlier this week.

The rumored specs are -

  • Symbian S60v3 OS
  • 3.2MP camera
  • HSDPA / HSUPA
  • 2.2? QVGA screen
  • 50MB internal memory
  • MicroSD Slot
  • GPS / A-GPS
  • 3.5MM audio jack
  • FM Radio

The C5 is expected to be announced later this month @ MWC 2010 at Barcelona. The pricing of the device is unknown.

Samsung S8500 and S8200 coming to MWC with USB 3.0 & BADA OS?

February 2nd, 2010

I have probably mentioned it a dozen times that Samsung is missing a smart OS in its touchscreen range (viz Corby, Star) and perhaps BADA OS would fill that gap. We are hearing that the S8200 would be the first BADA OS phone from Samsung and might well be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress later this month. The S8200 is said to be a Snapdragon powered high-end touchscreen, that would feature a 3.7″ AMOLED screen (), 5MP camera, WiFi, GPS, HSPA etc. Hope they also manage to get a more mature OS for the low end touchscreens aswell after the mega BADA OS launch is done with.

In other news it is also confirmed that Samsung GT-S8500 would be the first smartphone to support USB 3.0 & bluetooth 3.0 which has just been cleared by the Bluetooth SIG. Another full touchscreen with a 3.1″ OLED display the S8500 might well be one of the BADA OS releases at MWC. Exciting stuff happening from Samsung, hope they live up to the hype.

Infibeam working on an Indian version of Kindle, named Pi?

January 22nd, 2010

We are hearing from a pretty reliable source that Infibeam (yes the shopping portal) is cooking up its ebook reader and has already got “killer” tieups with some publications. Currently no ebook reader has really launched in India and local publishers are still battling to get the hang of the social media wave and digital marketing. In such a scenario the possibility of an Indian Kindle is like the Apple tablet for local publishers.

The source goes on to say that the Infibeam reader would support local languages and in all probability will be called the ‘Pi’. No details on the hardware, pricing or launch but this one is said to be “thinner” than the Amazon Kindle (not sure if he was referring to the original Kindle or the Kindle 2 with the thinner remark). We also now note a ebook section on Infibeam that lists a ‘Reading Device’ with a ‘Pie’ symbol that adds some more fuel to the rumor.

Apple preparing tablet with own chip design? 5″ iPhone & more!

January 21st, 2010

While we count the days to the upcoming Apple event that would shed some official light (hopefully) on the entire tablet case. A lot of speculation about the technical specification and Apple’s game plan has just emerged (warning: take every bit with a pinch of salt). Strong bets are being placed on a bigger iPhone with a 5″ display and a tablet with 7 – 9″ screen or touchscreen mac.

Apple had acquired chip maker P.A. Semi some time back and it is expected that the technology housed herein would power handhelds some day. Talk of a multicore iPhone with a PA Semi chip is nothing new and it is now being said that the Apple tablet chip is only designed by Apple and Samsung would manufacture the same. Apple is said to be on track to get “the most powerful, lowest-cost (more…)

Apple unveiling its latest creation on Jan 27th

January 19th, 2010

Feels good to have some confirmation on an Apple rumor that promises something revolutionary. No its not the Apple tablet going official but atleast the Apple event for January 27th which is expected to be the launch platform the iSlate and possibly reveal a new iPhone / iPhoneOS. While I still remain confused on what the iSlate would offer, we have some idea of what the iPhone OS 4.0 can show up.

Firstly it is expected that the iPhone OS 4.0 would run on the tablet aswell as the iPhone / iTouch. Amongst the new features multitasking is something we have waited for long enough and its time for the iPhone to adopt it. However we might also see Apple’s own Maps application that is rumored to be in works and will eventually replace the Google Maps native app on the touch and the iPhone. But for now all excitement waiting for the iSlate… i.e. if its coming :P

(Apple is marketing the event as “come see our latest creation” which certainly points at a NEW product!)

Palm Pre Plus / Pixi Plus specs and pricing leaked

January 16th, 2010

The rumored upgrade of the Palm Pre and the Palm Pixi were announced at the CES 2010. Palm CEO Jon Rubenstein unveiled the Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus on stage along with a lot of other exciting upgrades to the WebOS. WebOS now supports video recording + editing along with some super gaming from developers like EA. The best part is that all WebOS devices (i.e. the Pre and the Pixi) would get these upgrades over the air.

Pre Plus and Pixi Plus would be the first Web OS phones to be sold by Verizon. Below are the specification of the two phones. (more…)

Do your gadgets come with a secret kill switch?

January 14th, 2010

These are old rumors that we have heard many times before. Ever happened to you that a laptop or a mobile stops working / malfunctions just after the warranty period is over? Well if conspiracy theories are to be believed companies design the product such that they stop working after the warranty expires. Happened to me many times with Apple iPods. This time particularly Sony is being named.

While such rumors about Sony is popular since the 80’s and the term ‘Sony Timer’ is said to be very popular in Japan. A company official accepted in 2006 that they find these claims ‘absurd’ and are ‘making a deliberate and concerted effort to improve Sony’s image’. [more here]

Its a fact that most average technology users don’t upgrade their Mobiles and Laptops (or for that matter even television or cameras) unless the earlier one breaks down. In the tech world where manufacturers are coming out with newer technology almost every few months, it becomes very hard to sell new technology to the masses. If all our day to day gadgets accompany us for 2-5 years, the technology giants would have a big problem. While this is no justification for having a secret kill switch on a hardware, any proof of such a practice can mean disaster for Sony or any other co.

Daily rumors on iPhone 4G and Apple iSlate (tablet)

January 13th, 2010

We are really going crazy trying to keep a track of all the crazy rumors, leaks and predictions about the Apple tablet and the 4th Generation iPhone. As soon as I write a post about the possibility of the iPhone 4G coming in May instead of June/July and the very next moment I see another rumor of an April launch doing the rounds. While the tech world is digesting all the latest release at CES 2010 the Apple rumors had become a daily affair.

Apple tablet rumors have a long history, we have seen numerous patents that suggest a tablet computer from Apple and at the same time those mysterious industry sources have been inputting the media with a different specification each day. Some suggest a 7″ screen while others believe that the tablet would be a 10.1″ display and a few smart analysts predict both to come true. Personally, as far as I know Apple, you will see only one size for the tablet and that too if  the tablet is really released. Wild leaks have suggested a projector inbuilt the Apple tablet, now such rumors drives us crazy and at the same time excites us at the possibility of the Apple tablet.

The iPhone 4G is much more real, as (more…)

Waiting for the Apple Tablet? add Google Tablet to the list!

January 3rd, 2010

Lets consider this official that 2010 is the year of tablets. The Crunchpad in its new form ‘Joo’Joo‘ has already been announced and the talk about an Apple Tablet never dies. All the chatter and constant rumors of big reputed companies working secretly on tablet devices makes me wonder if this would do to the portable computing scene what netbooks did?

While all hopes of redefining the tablet experience lies on Apple, we now hear that Google is rumored to be working on a tablet computer along with HTC since over a year. While the Google Chrome OS is a reality and a tablet booting straight to a browser is real aswell (the CrunchPad / JooJoo); it makes this rumor sound very real that Google might be working on its own Tablet.

So may it be the iSlate or a Chrome OS powered Google Tablet, the food for thought is how will this fit into our routine lives trying to survive between a desktop/notebook and a smartphone. I don’t know many people who own both – a netbook and a notebook; for the same reason having a super smartphone and a tablet together would mean overlapping functionalities.

January 1st, 2010

When it comes to Android, Motorola and HTC seems to be the top phone manufacturers putting a huge stake on the Google’s open source operating system. After the success of Droid, Motorola has been working on a number of new android handsets and even on an android application store. The latest rumors are that Motorola is all set to unveil two more Android devices next week at CES.

Nokia preparing dual-sim phones for 2010?

December 26th, 2009

After being knocked off from the no. 1 position by Samsung in the UK market, Nokia now seems to be realizing that competition has heated up. Rumors are now rife that Nokia may soon be coming out with dual-SIM cell phones, as early as second quarter of 2010. After Samsung, LG and Motorola made similar moves, Nokia, too, seems to be following the same lines.

Nokia is expected to target emerging markets, having lost some of its market share there. One point that must be noted here is that many carriers do not prefer such cell phones, for obvious competitive reasons. So, it’s highly likely that such phones will come out as individual manufactured units and not paired with services (more…)

Another day with multiple Apple tablet rumors, iSlate.com & Patent

December 25th, 2009

I hate writing about rumors about unannounced Apple gadgets but then we have 2 official things about the whole Tablet Mac issue today. The first one being the domain secured by Apple in 2007: iSlate.com and the other one, a patent application that shows how one Apple plans to make the tablet touchscreen feel real.

It has been discovered that Apple own the domain name iSlate.com since 2007 and has kept the registration details under privacy protection. This can well be the name of the unannounced 7″ tablet that is being rumored for a Jan release. However we cant be certain that a domain can reveal a upcoming product name and to give us more options Apple had also trademarked the term ‘TabletMac’ recently. Adding its share of confusion to the matter, Apple has iPhone.org since 1999 and on the other hand they paid a huge amount to get iPhone.com in 2007.

The second hint about the Apple tablet comes from a patent application that shows (more…)

Jan 2010: High resolution iPhone 4G or the Tablet Mac?

December 24th, 2009

Multiple rumors about unannounced, unseen and much desired Apple products is something we are used to. Right from the iPhone Nano last year to the multiple iPhone’s that we should have seen in 2009, there is plenty behind us already. But here is a interesting duo that is making news today. The iPhone 4th Generation and the rumored Apple Tablet. While we can be certain that the iPhone 4th Gen is surely in works, the tablet is something completely driven by rumors (since months/years).

Boy genius report today claimed that it has some concrete source telling that Apple is gearing up for a Tablet announcement in January 2010 and the device is confirmed to be sporting a 7″ display. This to an extent discards the earlier rumors of a 9.7″ screen on the Apple Tablet. This is backed by rumors that Apple has requested some premium app developers to present a full screen version of their apps, which currently run on 320×480 (more…)
