Show us the Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson!

March 11th, 2010

As this is Oscar week, we will just start this post with an instance from Jerry Maguire in which football star Rod Tidwell tells his agent Jerry Maguireto shut up and “show him the money!” Well, we can understand how he felt after hearing Sony Ericsson make YET another  comment about the Xperia X10. We first heard of the Android-driven device in early November when we were told it would be available in Q1 2010. At the recent MWC in Barcelona, we were shown Mini and Mini Pro versions of the device and told it would be coming a bit later.

And NOW we have a Sony Ericsson spokesperson telling CNET that it could come in the second half of the year with a new version of Android. Honestly, we were very impressed by the specs of the X10 (a 8.1 MP shooter, 4.0 inch touchscreen, and every connectivity option in town) but the inordinate delay in its arrival is really making us wonder if like the original Xperia, it would be actually outdated by the time it arrived. It must be one of the few smartphones in cellphone history to have three different avatars, none of which happen to be in the market.

So allow us to paraphrase Rod Tidwell and say, “Enough talk, Sony E. Show us the X10 in the market. Please!”

Sony Ericsson Dot: Crowdsourcing Mobile Ideas

February 18th, 2010

Sony Ericsson has gone live with a new initiative called ‘SE-dot’. SE dot is aimed at crowdsourcing and developing new ideas. As the company informs us, the idea behind SE-dot is to jump the focus from technology and come down to practical ways in which mobiles can make things easy. On the site you would find ideas being put up, discussed and taken right upto prototype stage. Most of these ideas seem to be problems that developers can offer a solution to via a mobile app, but given the strength of community, Sony Ericsson can really get some good inputs from power users. Using collaboration between users Dot does better that other attempts that we have seen, like Palm asking you to give them ideas.

One cannot buy innovation but hope SE-dots sparks some good ideas though!

Here is the introduction video: (more…)

Sony Ericsson Faith leaked, inspired by Nokia e-series?

January 13th, 2010

Leaked pictures of the Sony Ericsson Faith are out. The device has a candy bar shape the looks inspired by the Nokia E-series QWERTY models like the E61, E62 and E71. Faith is known to be running Windows Mobile 6.5 and might take up from where the P1i left the race. The QWERTY form factor also popularly referred as the Blackberry design has worked very well for Nokia and all the Nokia offerings right from the E61 to the latest E72 have been well received. Ofcourse the difference here is that Sony Ericsson is running Windows Mobile instead of Symbian, however the full QWERTY form factor has a good market.

SE Faith IMO would give competition to the Nokia E72 if the pricing is good. Faith has a beautiful design and a decent feature set. Here is a quick look at the specs and the photo gallery: (more…)

Sony Ericsson U5i clears FCC

December 27th, 2009

After the Xperia X10 FCC clearance and is on its way to be the first Android device from Sony Ericsson, the U5i has just cleared FCC. Wondering what U5i is? Well, for now, no one knows. The ‘i’ in the naming sure brings us back to the naming system followed by SE like the S700i, W960i and K850i.

The U5i is been related to the Sony Ericsson Kurara which is a Symbian powered, 8.1MP camera and 3.5″ AMOLED touchscreen phone. Internally, the Satio is known us U1 and the Aino is known as the U10, while the SE Kurara is known as the U5. So, the U5i that just cleared the FCC could be the Americanised version of the SE Kurara. Another rumor says that the U5i is a low-end symbian phone with a (more…)

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 releasing on Jan 18?

December 14th, 2009

se_x10_pre-order

The Sony Ericsson flagship model Xperia X10 is now available for pre-order on Play.com. If the release date on Play.com is to be believed, X10 will now be available from 18 Jan 2010 which is a month prior to the rumored Feb 2010 release. Yet once again, SE disappoints us by another over-prised handset. The Xperia X10 can be pre-ordered for  £529.99 (about $880) which is the same as reported by us previously. X10 is SE’s first handset powered by Andoid OS and features a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor. Also a custom UI, 4.0″ screen & 8.1 MP camera, more here.

Sony Ericsson relaeses new firmware for Satio, still not on sale. Aino on shelves

December 3rd, 2009

sony_ericsson_aino_satio

The high-end Sony Ericsson Satio has been through some serious software bug which caused it to shut-down randomly. The software bug issue caused a lot of British cellphone retailers, including Carphone Warehouse,  to stop selling the 12MP symbian powered phone.

While SE did deny that the software bug was a serious issue, they did accept that it cannot be fixed over-the-air. But, SE somehow managed to release the new firmware which they claim has fixed the bug. The new firmware update has been released only for some limited regions, making the situation even worse. Even after loosing a large chunk of sale during the holiday season, SE has still not been able to bring the phone back to shelves.

The buzz over the internet surely says that the once who have updated the firmware are now satisfied. The new firmware not only fixed the power-down bug but also speeded up the phone. Also, there were news that the Aino has been pulled out from sales due to a touchscreen issue. SE and Carphone Warehouse have confirmed that there are no issues with Aino and the phone was never pulled off the shelves. The touchscreen issue was a media rumour.

Overall, it looks like SE is having some tough time to come back to its original glory. Satio software bug and Aino touchscreen rumors have just made the issue worse with huge sales drop even during the holiday season.

Sony Ericsson runs into trouble with touchsceen issue on Aino

November 27th, 2009

se-aino

The Platstation compatible phone from Sony Ericsson, Aino has developed touchscreen issues (details sketchy) and is no longer on sale. Recently another SE model Satio featuring a 12MP camera was also delayed with some software bug. The company will surely take a setback on its plan to go profitable again, missing out big time on the holiday season sales with 2 of their recent releases not being on sale.

Sony Ericsson is certainly having a tough time and for some reason I always find their software buggy and slow, right from the T610 (which was a great phone in its time IMO) to the K750i / K850i that I used. Hope they get on the right track with better smartphone than just wow gadgets.

Gizmo Review: Sony Ericsson MH907 motion sensing earphones

November 27th, 2009

mh907-black

While Sony Ericsson has trimmed its Bluetooth offerings to have just 1 button control, the regular headset loses all buttons with the sensME technology that comes in the MH907. The centre of attraction for this device is the smart motion sensing controls that automatically pauses the music if you remove a earbud, and answers an incoming call automatically if you insert the earbud back in your ear. In case you are listening to music already or have the earbuds inserted, you just need to remove and reinsert any of the earbuds to answer the call (you can read all combinations here). The headset works by sensing (more…)

Review: Sony Ericsson MS500 Wireless Speaker

November 20th, 2009

sony-ms500-1

Sony Ericsson is rolling out some extremely cool accessories (wish the cellphones were equally good) and after the fantastic IS800 Bluetooth headset, we now have our hands on the MS500.

SE MS500 is a 2 watt, Bluetooth 2.1 wireless speaker that promises easy listening to music on the go. We tested this with a range of devices and it connected with all of them flawlessly, but the sad part is that the iPhone or any Nokia won’t be the right companion to this. You need a Sony Ericsson device to get the most out of this. Using a N72 or Nokia 6700 gives lesser audio output than the integrated speakers on the Nokia. The MS500 lacks volume controls just like (more…)

X10 for $880 :(

November 20th, 2009

Just before the Xperia X10 went official we ended with a cry “don’t over price it please!” and our worst fears come true. Gizmodo reports that the Xperia X10 is priced at $880 by Sony Ericsson.

Whenever SE comes up with a good touchscreen, they over price is to such an extent that it automatically puts the competition several steps ahead. Except the P990i I don’t remember any other touchscreen offering from them retailing below Rs 15000 in India. While I am disappointed, even the HTC HD was priced similarly in India when launched and we can expect similar from the HD2, some how the iPhone in India looks reasonably priced to me now!

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 now Official

November 3rd, 2009

SEX10

The most anticipated Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has been officially announced by SE today. The phone packs all the rumored and speculated features we saw till now along with some new amazing features. The Android-powered SE X10 features a 4” touchscreen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 8.1 MP camera and the Rachael UI. The design of the phone is the same as we saw in the leaked out pics. But the way SE has presented it in the introductory video, it just looks more stylish, sleek and curvy.

Xperia X10 plays the Android version 1.6, highlighting to us the importance of the Verizon – Google partnership blessing the Motorola Droid with Android Eclair (V2.0) or the Rachael UI / customization costing Sony Ericsson the opportunity to upgrade. However the phone introduces (more…)

Android OS 2.0 goes official, formula to compete iPhone?

October 28th, 2009

Ok even I hate bringing up the iPhone every now and then while discussing smartphones and Android, but hey look at the brighter side – I didn’t say iPhone killer, I said ‘compete’ :P

Just days before we see the Android 2.0-powered Motorola Droid and probably the Android 2.0-powered Xperia from Sony Ericsson,  the version 2.0 of the OS has been made official and the SDK with new API’s is out for developers to play with. There are a whole lot of goodies for users and platform tweaks for developers – a complete list is here (video after the jump). But what excites me are the steps that will counter some of the major iPhone advantages. (more…)

Android powered Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 (or X5/X10) i.e. Rachael almost official

October 28th, 2009

rachael

Until now, we have had enough gossip about the Sony Ericsson’s Android phone that just kept changing names every time a new rumor surfaced. But this time is the first there has been some move from SE giving some proof of the handset becoming official soon. SE may call it another Xperia (X3, X5 or X10) or the Rachael project, but for now we’re going to refer it as Rachael.

Sony Ericsson has leaked an official sales brochure of this, its (more…)

MH907: Motion Activated Buds from Sony Ericsson

September 21st, 2009

MH907_yellow_w300

Sony Ericsson announced what they claim would change the way you listen to music forever. Any guesses what this new gadget be? A new out-of-the-box music player, an iPod touch lookalike competitor, a gaming console with music, a new walkman phone would all be good guesses but wrong too. Sony is boosting about a new pair of buds! While the HBH-IS800 bluetooth headset left us stunned, this one isn’t all that revolutionary as promised.

The buds are the world’s first of its kind as they have no buttons. Dubbed MH 907, these buds are motion sensing and start playing the music as the user plugs them in his ears (the technology that SE uses is called ’sensME’). Taking off one of the buds would just pause the music and you can guess what taking off both of them would do.

The  buds require conductive surface (like skin) to start working. So you can be assured that they wont start eating up your mobile battery when squeezed in (more…)

Sony Ercisson’s first Android aka Xperia X3 coming in Jan 2010?

September 18th, 2009

xperia x3

While SE confirmed the WM 6.5 based Xperia X2 recently putting the Android based Xperia rumors with a ‘?’, latest round of rumors suggest that the X3 would be outed in Jan 2010. This might be around the same time as the X2 hits the shelf’s.

Leaked shots of the X3 suggest that it would be a full touchscreen Android with no physical QWERTY (much like the Nokia X6). We have already seen a couple of leaked shots for the X3 along with rumored specs. With Android becoming a crowded space, Sony Ericsson would certainly like to come out with its own offering asap.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness coming in november

September 16th, 2009

pureness-SE2

Last when we heard of this weird concept phone (KiKi) from Sony Ericsson, little did I knew that this would show up as soon as November 2009! Officially named the Xperia Pureness, the feature list of this phone can be written differently, i.e. with the features that it is actually missing. So if you are attracted by this unique design, be ready to shell out £530 and live without a touchscreen, GPS, Camera, WiFi etc. Pureness would be a iconic phone and SE won’t have a mass market approach for it. The pureness would go on sale at Selfridges and design museum shops. You can catch the promotional video of SE Pureness after the jump
