4N wristwatch is a mechanically digital timepiece

March 10th, 2010

When technology advances and we develop simpler mechanisms, the devices keep getting more economical. But what about those who can’t think simple and go on developing complicated designs for simple things? They end up making what is called as exclusive luxury goods :P . 4N is a similar unaffordable luxury watch from designer François Quentin. (more…)

Gizmo mod: HDD to Digital Clock (Strobeshnik)

March 7th, 2010

Do you have an old Hard Drive eating dust on some top shelf of your work place? If you do, here is a cool way to use it and make some of your friends go wow for your new gizmo clock. All you have to do is follow the mod done by Svofski.

Modder Svofski converted his old hard drive into a digital clock using some LEDs and a controller circuit. The controller circuit and the LEDs are mounted behind the platter of the hard disk. LEDs glow to show the time on the rotating drive platter. The stroboscopic effect makes the numbers look persistent on the face of drive platter, while actually the numbers are created by the LEDs behind the platter.Check out the video to see the mod in action. Remember how Munnabhai topped a medical exam, with the help of Dr. Rustom who gave him instructions on the phone while the exam was on! Now such mal-practitioners can be easily noticed in a crowd of candidates. Thanks to the AwareFashion Shirt !!

AwareFashion, a shirt designed by Richard Etter, has a hidden pocket that senses nearby GSM band signals to indicate the cellphones in the proximity of the wearer. The shirt is actually a part of AwareFashion clothes line that are based on the concept of the wearer wanting to get a sense of his immediate digital environment.

February 23rd, 2010

Remember Sony Ericsson’s motion sensing earphones? Well, they ain’t that cool anymore. NTT Docomo’s latest technological advancement is a pair of earphones that can be controlled by eye movements. With the help of special electrodes, the earphones are able to detect the charge between the cornea and the retina of the eye and thus understand the direction in which the eyes are moving. Is original the new fake? Ghost shifts at work

February 18th, 2010

We have heard it since long that components and spares for MNC products sold in India are sourced illegally (or perhaps a better term is “Jugaad”) from company manufacturing units itself. The vast manufacturing hubs that China houses are not new to controversies. People returning from China have claimed to me that you can get replica of any gadget at less than half the price and yet give the same finishing and features as the original company product. But this LA Times report takes things to another level.

The report cites one Bunnie Huang of Chumby Industries who came across a tricky situation while handling a hand-held manufacturing. Apparently a whole lot of Kingston cards that Chumby had sourced turned out to be defective and Kingston refused to accept the same for returns. Given the huge investment in sourcing a few thousand cards, Bunnie decided to investigate.

His conclusions: Some of the cards he found were probably produced using the same manufacturing equipment as the certified goods. But the similarities end there. Huang describes the phenomenon of “ghost shifts” at some factories, where a rogue worker during off hours may run off a few batches of chips using materials that had been rejected as defective by the day shift, or purchased as second-grade parts from legitimate manufacturers such as Samsung or Toshiba.

What makes things even more tricky is (more…)

Leech Plug! You plug, it unplugs (Video)

February 17th, 2010

At OG we have always been a fan of power saving technologies. Hence here we have the Leech Plug. Whats so fascinating about this one? It is an outlet regulator which unplugs itself once the required energy is obtained, just like a leech and hence the name. Its designed by RISD student Conor Klein.

It uses a timer circuit coupled with electromechanics which enables it to detach itself from the socket once fully charged. See the  video below for a better understanding: (more…)

Digital Cosmetic Mirror – the future of beauty treatments [Video]

February 11th, 2010

Choosing the right kind of make-up can be time consuming and skin damaging too. Keeping these issues under consideration, Shiseido has developed a Digital Cosmetic Mirror.

The mirror has a built-in camera that scans the user’s face and then different types of virtual make-up can be tested on the scanned image. The mirror provides recommendations on the latest make-up trends and also has options for different make-up styles which can be browsed through a touchscreen. It provides a print-out of ‘before and after’ image along with the purchase details for the make-up.  The digital cosmetic mirror not only helps the user to choose the best make-up, but also helps in avoiding the blunders of experimenting.

While the mirror would save customer’s time, it would also help the cosmetic industry to save some cost with the end of samples and testers. Do check the video of the Shiseido’s Digital Cosmetic Mirror in action. (more…)

Neon Green Soular backpack

February 11th, 2010

While onlygizmos has been covering a lot of green technology of late. Here is another one that has caught our attention. This one looks like a normal backpack (durable more importantly) but upon closer inspection you might realise that it has a solar panel attached to it. Must say that its a really good effort for the bag to look so clean and durable even after being fitted with solar panels. See the below image for more info:

The solar panel is easily detachable from the backpack and can also be used as a carry bag separately. There is no pricing information available for this one on their website.

Samsung’s new TicToc player uses shake to skip tracks

February 11th, 2010

By the first looks of it,I thought this was some new nail polish bottle. After taking a closer look at it I realised that this ones got a wired tail and it is a digital music player. Now Samsung has introduced the new TicToc player that does all the functions of an MP3 player with just a single button and an accelerometer. The player has no display and is as sleek as its closest compeditor – the iPod Shuffle.

The device has a smart accelerometer sensor that changes track. A slow shake would line-up a slow song while a vigorous shake would play a fast one. The only key on the player acts as both the power button and the volume control key. Holding the player upside down with the key pressed reduces the volume and vice versa. (more…)

RUG with Scale!

February 9th, 2010

Are you the one who is not happy with their weight? (To tell you the truth mostly all of us aren’t). We usually tend to avoid stepping on the weighing scale fearing the worst. Well heres one way to ensure that you step on one daily. Its the door mat (door mat again!) or a rug that comes fitted with a digital glowing scale that shows the user’s previous weight, present weight, and goal weight. Its designed by Kwon Sunman, wonder what was the inspiration behind this one! Though by the looks of it, its much more cosy and comfortable than the traditional ones. Also you do have the option to detach the rug for cleaning purposes or attaching a new one as per your taste.

Right now this is just a concept. Would definitely like to have one though when its ready…

Samsung plans to launch that weird transparent laptop

February 6th, 2010

Remember that weird (futuristic) transparent AMOLED laptop that Samsung displayed at CES this year? Now the news on it is that the company is actually planning to launch it within a year.

weird transparent amoled laptop from Samsung

And not just that, Samsung actually wants to create a separate category of products having the transparent screen and plans to launch several such products next year. Also there are rumors of a transparent navigation device that Samsung plans to mount on the car windshields.

My views on this weird laptop form factor with a transparent display still remain the same : it’s simply has no practical use! I mean, obviously this looks cool but it also allows people around you to see what work you are doing. So that clearly violates your own privacy. And then, there are issues of it’s usability in the direct sunlight. At the max, you can play music, games or do some casual work on it. You surely won’t spend your hard-earned bucks only to play music while you show off the gorgeous transparent screen. Will you?

As for the transparent navigation device that Samsung plans to mount on the car windshields. It makes a lot of sense, given that this technology would aid a situation where we are discussing in-car screens, that would not distract the drivers attention from the road ahead (atleast not completely).

Juice-up 80 devices together with 80 Port USB Hub

January 31st, 2010

Are you the one who is  always cursing your PC for having only two to four USB ports.  Japanese company Thanko have introduced the 80 Port USB Hub which can charge 80 devices simultaneously. Which means, an extra 77 ports when you have already plugged-in your cellphone, camera and iPod (provided you have their USB charging cable). Sad though is the fact that you can only charge your devices and not sync them with the comp using this gadget.

The 80 Port USB Hub is available for $165 in Japan only. No news on availability in other parts of the world. Wonder if this weird gadget will ever make it to the other parts of the world.

Video game for you, massage for your partner

January 30th, 2010

For all of us whose Girlfriends/Wives hate their gaming habits, here is a good gadget to make them to encourage you for playing more video game. The Massage Me is a wearable video game controller that acts as a massager. The games involves two people, the player and the one enjoying the massage. The massage jacket is made of flexible buttons that transforms the gamer’s inputs into massage techniques. The system sure is interesting, but might become awkward for times, depending on who plays it.

“The best massages come from playing games that require the player to press a lot of buttons and combinations,” says designers Mika Satomi and Hannah Perner-Wilson. All those who get some naughty thoughts by the above statement, would be disappointed to know that there is no news on the pricing and availability of the system :P

Do your gadgets come with a secret kill switch?

January 14th, 2010

These are old rumors that we have heard many times before. Ever happened to you that a laptop or a mobile stops working / malfunctions just after the warranty period is over? Well if conspiracy theories are to be believed companies design the product such that they stop working after the warranty expires. Happened to me many times with Apple iPods. This time particularly Sony is being named.

While such rumors about Sony is popular since the 80’s and the term ‘Sony Timer’ is said to be very popular in Japan. A company official accepted in 2006 that they find these claims ‘absurd’ and are ‘making a deliberate and concerted effort to improve Sony’s image’. [more here]

Its a fact that most average technology users don’t upgrade their Mobiles and Laptops (or for that matter even television or cameras) unless the earlier one breaks down. In the tech world where manufacturers are coming out with newer technology almost every few months, it becomes very hard to sell new technology to the masses. If all our day to day gadgets accompany us for 2-5 years, the technology giants would have a big problem. While this is no justification for having a secret kill switch on a hardware, any proof of such a practice can mean disaster for Sony or any other co.

No need to water your plants anymore with Dew Drops

January 13th, 2010

Do you often forget to water your plants? Well, no worries. Thanks to a concept design by Industrial designer Jacky Wu called Dew Drops. It uses a simple artificial  funnel-shaped leaf that extracts water-vapor in the air  and condenses it to water your plants using thermoelectric cooling.

All you need to do is, place the artificial leaf in your plant pot, power the leaf and within no time it should start watering your plant.

The concept and the design sure looks exciting, but I fail to get the benefit behind using the product : (more…)

Another crazy concept PC, this time from MSI

January 12th, 2010

Have a look again at this PC? Don’t you think they forgot the keyboard. Well, actually there is a keyboard, it’s a transparent keyboard that is looking almost invisible due to its dark biege background.

After Samsung launched an outrageous looking transparent PC at CES this year, MSI too joined the party. This is a concept PC, with a keyboard that apparently slides out only from the bottom (more…)
