See You Later, Navigator!

March 19th, 2010

It might be becoming a part of our lives slowly and steadily but that does not stop us from taking a light-hearted poke at GPS and its foibles

“Hi! All set for the trip?”

“You bet. I am looking forward to loads of fun – just the two of us, the road and the trusty, if rusty, automobile. What is that rolled up thing you are carrying?”

“The road map. We will get lost without it.”

“Are you from the age of Columbus? We live in the era of hi-tech, the time of GPS. All we need is this handy little gizmo – the Drive, Walk and Talk Navigator, the device that shows you the way.”

“Don’t you think we should take the maps along, just as a back-up?”

“ And perhaps we could even add a magnetic compass for good measure. Grow up!”

“Oh all right then! Shall we start?”

“Not just now. Let the device get a fix on the satellites first. It might take a few minutes.”

“Can’t we just get moving? Your device can lock on to its blessed satellites as we go along.”

“Patience. There, it’s got a lock now. Let me just enter our destination and there you are – the best route to the place. On a map. Complete with voice and text controls. Cool, eh? Let’s hit the road!”

“Excellent! I was just wondering if we should follow the regular path or be a bit adventurous. I could turn here…”

“Stop!”

“Why? Did I hit something?”

“No, no. I just need to tell the (more…)

Mobience smallQWERTY for touchscreen devices

February 1st, 2010

When the world is busy shifting to new full touchscreen devices like the iPad, there are a lot of people who still love to type on physical keyboard. For such audience, South Korean company Mobiance have developed a pocket sized keypad called the smallQWERTY.

Although the name does have the words QWERTY in it, the device is more of a traditional keypad used in cellphones. There are eight additional functional buttons to the keypad, four on each side. The user would have to tap button multiple times for typing on this device. The developers of the keypad have not revealed any technical specifications of the device. Which means, the connectivity mode used and the compatibility of the keypad is not known for now. Also, there is no news on its pricing and availability.

One thing I would certainly like to see is myself typing on an iPad using my Nokia E63 or perhaps more realistically the iPhone!

January 14th, 2010

We have already heard about solar chargers and kinetic chargers (theses are the ones with the dynamos attached to it). The latest one doing the rounds is the WI-FI charger. Yes, you heard it right and its no typo error…

Now the one we are talking about was interestingly launched at CES this year. Its called the ‘RCA Airnergy‘.  This small cell phone sized device taps the energy from the WI-Fi signals and converts them into DC which is then stored on an on board battery and this can be used to charge cell phones, music players and other such smaller gadgets.

Robotic hummingbird to help in rescue operations

December 29th, 2009

Hiroshi Liu’s 10cm robot is much like a hummingbird. The robot can fly basic left, right, up & down and also do shapes like an 8. This little robot weight 2.6gms and is controlled by a IR remote control. Apparently the researchers have already sunk $2 million in developing the 4 winged mini robot accomplishing many technical challenges. Powered by a small motor this thing is said to be more stable than a helicopter.

The next phase of development would see this thing with a micro camera attached and ability to hover mid-air. But that’s happening only in 2011. This thing is expected to help in emergencies like a building collapse where it can enter small gaps and send video footage to air (more…)

Go green with the Sustail Wind-up Mouse

December 14th, 2009

sustail_windup_mouse

The beauty of concept devices is that they visualize things in a unique way. But, the challenge lies in bringing them to life. Sustail is one such concept that I would like to see in real life.

Sustail is a (toy like) mouse that is charged by human power. The mouse gets charged by a winding up through a key. It also has a sound feedback to show the level of charging done and indicates full charging. Sustail is not a real mouse. Its just a concept, but a noble one.

Senseware lets you track temperature, drops, location and more of your parcel

November 25th, 2009

senseware fedex

FedEx is pushing the boundaries of consignment tracking beyond our beliefs. GPS tracking of a shipment is common and we have seen some experiments around that, with people leaving behind GPS navigators in shipments just for kicks. But Senseware costing $120 a month would let you do a lot more. You will be notified of the temperature, handling (drops), location and light exposure of your FedEx shipment, all live over the internet.

Currently in trial with 50 Fed-Ex clients, this isn’t the gadget you will use to track your wives birthday gift, but serious medical shipments like human organs would largely benefit from this. Of course businesses would love this once the pricing falls further. For the moment, you are free to speculate what the future of logistics can be.

Samsung unveils Corby bluetooth headsets: WE490

November 16th, 2009

samsung coby headset

Samsung Corby has certainly done great with a reasonably priced (actually really well priced) product that gives the right blend of style and features for the massed. It may rightly be called the poor man’s iPhone and perhaps the cheapest phone with a capacitive touchscreen out there currently. Seeing the great reception of the Coby handset (and the cheap touchscreens in general); Samsung has gone ahead and announced a funky Corby branded bluetooth headset (WE490).

Featuring noise reduction, echo cancellation, and auto volume control these Corby bluetooth headsets come in bright colours with changeable panels just like the phone. Expected to cost $45 this is the right accessory for your little Corby.

Don’t leave home without your Fueltank portable charger

September 28th, 2009

fueltank_uno

Whenever your phone’s battery dies while you are on the move, you have a number of portable chargers available like the Power2Go charger. But there are some unique features in the Fueltank UNO that gives it an edge over other similar products.

Fueltank UNO is a universal charger with the difference of having an added safety option for your cell phone. Included voltage regulatory technology calculates the amount of power that your phone will require, thus avoiding any damage to the battery due to overcharging. A series of LED lights on the charger indicates the power status of the charger battery.

Fueltank UNO also carries four times the charging power of an average lithium ion battery. This means that with one time full charge of Fueltank, you could have upto four times of the portable charge of your cell phone.

The Fueltank UNO is compatible with (more…)

MH907: Motion Activated Buds from Sony Ericsson

September 21st, 2009

MH907_yellow_w300

Sony Ericsson announced what they claim would change the way you listen to music forever. Any guesses what this new gadget be? A new out-of-the-box music player, an iPod touch lookalike competitor, a gaming console with music, a new walkman phone would all be good guesses but wrong too. Sony is boosting about a new pair of buds! While the HBH-IS800 bluetooth headset left us stunned, this one isn’t all that revolutionary as promised.

The buds are the world’s first of its kind as they have no buttons. Dubbed MH 907, these buds are motion sensing and start playing the music as the user plugs them in his ears (the technology that SE uses is called ’sensME’). Taking off one of the buds would just pause the music and you can guess what taking off both of them would do.

The  buds require conductive surface (like skin) to start working. So you can be assured that they wont start eating up your mobile battery when squeezed in (more…)

iTwin presents an all new way of syncing data using USB

September 15th, 2009

itwin tc50

iTwin is a USB gadget that brings you an all new concept of ‘cableless cable’. The device has two parts that can be plugged into two different systems and used to sync data securely without installing any software or using a login id. It gets interesting with the bit that the two systems might be anywhere around the world after the device has synced a private key! Now thats really 007 style gadget, isn’t it?

While I am not sure if this thing requires an active internet connection or something on both systems to work, it seem so. For now I would be happy to have something around $25 that can just let me plug two USB sticks to any gadget (say a camera and my laptop) and sync it.

If you lose the device, you can text iTwin to turn off the other half or you can set a password between the two. The company gets around company firewalls by sending the encrypted data through iTwin’s back-end. [Venture Beat]

Revealed at TechCrunch50, its makers plan to launch iTwin sometime in first half of 2010 and retail for $99. All the best guyz!

Wi-Fire USB WiFi adapter reviewed

August 19th, 2009

wifire-4

Wi-Fire is a nice geeky USB WiFi adapter that I have been testing for a week or so now. It works flawlessly with my WinXP based desktop and my Acer notebook powered by WinVista. And the good thing for many techies is the Linux compatibility.

Wi-Fire certainly performs better than my old D-Link DW-G122 adapter as well as my internal WiFi adapter on the Acer. The installation process is simple and you can easily configure this thing in minutes. Wi-Fire has a very innovative design taking a different approach than the standard USB sticks that we see. WiFire can cling to your LCD monitor or any other location pretty easily and you just need to rotate the antenna to optimize the WiFi range. The connection to the system takes place with the help of a mini USB cable.

wifire-review

For me the Wi-Fire improves the WiFi connectivity by 20-30% (thats like doubling the range available at times) with three wireless routers being shared around my neighbourhood. Since I use a desktop for regular work, I really don’t mind using the WiFire as it hangs around on unused airspace on my table, however if you plan to use this with a notebook, be sure you are adding a not so small accessory to your bag.  WiFire is priced at $59. (More images after the jump)
