Chrome OS officially previewed by Google, launch in 2010
November 20th, 2009 by Annkur
“The day broadband is down at my place, I hardly switch it on my computer.” – that’s what I said back in July and with today’s preview of Chrome OS, that’s exactly what inspires Google to work on this project. We are about to use Netbooks as NETbooks finally.

Here are a few notes from what Google revealed about the Chrome OS today:
- All data will be on the cloud. Anything on the device would just be a local cache
- It’s all about web apps
- Security is priority. All apps being web apps, they will talk to the OS like a browser. Checks the OS for any edits/malware during boot
- All your data on device is encrypted, losing it would mean no compromise on sensitive data and no real data loss since everything is on the cloud
- Over-the-air updates for the OS
- Currently boots in 7 secs, will get faster
- Supports only SSD (solid state drives/flash drives) to maintain speed
- Google wants netbooks for Chrome OS to have full keyboard, high resolution, good trackpad
- No ads on the OS. Free. Open Source
All in all Google sees a new way of computing in the near future. Cloud computing is something that everyone is banking on, and here is Google’s opportunity to add value to the operating systems game. Interestingly, the possibility of Chrome OS being expanded beyond netbooks is not being ruled out.
