Cuil a failure? or just a beginning
December 30th, 2008 by Annkur

Earlier this year Cuil (pronounced ‘Cool’) was believed to be a Google killer. A new search engine started by some industry veterans and well funded. I was personally amazed to see the amount of PR and buzz it managed to create early on. Though the day it launched we were disappointed (it didn’t index us), the quality was not upto the mark. And eventually, few months down the line it seems to have hit a dead end with no real traffic.
So what really caused this crash? Is Cuil really that bad? Maybe not
Earlier this year when we spoke to Jimmy Wales one of the hottest topic was Search Wikia. After WikiPedia Mr Wales had his eyes set on the way people search on the internet. And there was one very important thing he talked about was developing the product / giving it time. The low key publicity and limited hype for Wikia was purposely done to keep the nascent search engine away from the commercial competition and comparisons.
He believed that they needed some time in isolation to work on the product and tweak it over a few years. But in case of Cuil, the team had investors to answer, market expectations and the big dream. While there is nothing wrong with a dream to make it big (we all have it), its about giving it time, and developing the product slowly with time. One cannot become big over night, right?
All said, I am sure the core team at Cuil would be working hard on the product and you never know in the coming years we might well see a real Google Competitor! Till then keep goooooooglinnn
