Dell has unveiled a new laptop that doesn’t tie you down anymore with unwanted cables, especially to charge your laptop. What’s even better is that the wireless charging is as effective as a wired one.

A wireless power notebook stand charges the Latitude Z using induction charging. Also, Dell claims that the Latitude Z 600 is the thinnest 16” laptop available in the market, at just 20mm thick. Below is a quick specification list of the Latitude Z.

  • 16” touchscreen display with 1600x900 resolution
  • 2Mp webcam with microphone (optional)
  • Intel Core 2 Duo 1.4 GHz processor (also offered a version with 1.6 Ghz CPU)
  • 2GB ram, expandable upto 4GB
  • 256 GB solid state storage
  • Multi-touch trackpad with support for pinch and zoom
  • Finger print scanner
  • Backlit keyboard

Along with these there are other interesting features of the Latitude Z. The optional camera is a “smart camera”. This camera can read business cards and save the information either in Microsoft Outlook or as a sheet of paper, and also automatically saves it as PDF. The camera also has face recognition capabilities.

Another interesting feature is the ‘Latitude ONI’. Latitude ONI is a mini-motherboard with an ARM processor and a Linux-based OS. It can be used as a secondary computer for limited functionalities, such as e-mail or web browsing. Dell claims that with this feature, the laptop’s battery life can be extended and run for a total of upto 12 hours.

The Dell Latitude Z will be available for US$1999 in the US and £1499 in the UK. No news yet on its release date or availability.

The 16″ touchscreen and 250GB solid state are nice (even though the resolution is pretty poor), but are the rest of the specs correct? Can you even buy 1.4GHz chips anymore? I like the idea of wireless charging. Except you need to sit it on top of a massive dock that’s pluged in to make use of it. So why not just either have a smaller regular dock, or no dock at all and just plug the thing in?

The specs are correct. A couple of things that I added in a update are the 1.6GHz version and the amazing backlit keyboard that Z 600 features

the dock on the other hand makes sense to me as it lifts the height of the laptop, I have seen many professionals keep books under thier notebook to do this. So it probably makes ergonomic sense in cases. Though agree that wireless charging has a long way to go before it gets mainstream
