Dolphin HD Browser for Android Has Major Privacy Bug: Fixed with Fresh Update

Folks over at Android Police have managed to dig out a major privacy bug in the popular Android browser Dolphin HD. The flaw noticed when the user switches on the “Webizine” mode in the browser sends all the URL’s you visit in that mode to a remote server en.mywebzines.com.

Even https sites are not spared. As you might have guessed, the remote server belongs to the developers of Dolphin. While most laypersons may not notice this, the smart ones didn’t and bought the flaw in to spotlight.

Soon after the flaw was revealed, Dolphin issued a statement that explained why they were doing it. While categorically denying that they were not storing URL’s visited by a user they said the collection of data was just a part of an “ancillary check” whether they webpage in question can be displayed in its recently introduced Webizine format.

Now, one good thing about this is that the Webizine format on Dolphin was only introduced back in June prior to which we can assume there was no breach of this sort.

Anyway, since the news leaked out, Dolphin has issued two updates that have temporarily fixed the issue. An update issued first claimed to fix it – but checks proved otherwise. However, with version 7.0.2. the issue has been fixed, said the developers of Dolphin browser on their blog.

Dolphin browser has been one of the more popular apps available on the Android platform with almost everyone liking the features offered by the product. This latest issue might prove to be a credibility blow for the browser.

Anyway, now that they claim to have fixed the issue, we hope things get back to normal. Also, you might want to update to the latest version of the browser. Oh, you might also want to have a look at our review of the iPad version of the same.
