Eric Schmidt resigns from Apple BOD

August 3rd, 2009 by Annkur

google-and-appleGoogle CEO Eric Schmidt, who also resided on the Apple Board of Directors has decided to bid goodbye to his position at Apple. Fingers were pointed way back when Google entered the smartphone race with its Android OS (Apple & Google were also under Antitrust scanner for the same) and things weren’t too far recently with Google announcing the Chrome OS and Apple taking down Google Voice App from the App Store.

Till now Eric Schmidt would excuse himself from Board meetings whenever they discussed something related to the iPhone. This ensured that there was no conflict of interests with Eric Schmidt being associated with both Google and Apple. Here is what the official statement reads:

“Eric has been an excellent Board member for Apple, investing his valuable time, talent, passion and wisdom to help make Apple successful,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

“Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board.” [more]

Its uncertain if Eric’s departure from Apple is a sign of souring relations between Apple and Google or just as sweet as the text above reads. Google entering the OS biz and Apple going aggressive on Google Voice app are good enough indication for many… for others the antitrust concern is a fair justification.
