FutureTech: Shake it, power it
April 1st, 2009 by Kunal
Nano-technology scientists are working on developing nanogenerators that can be used to power your mobile with just a shake. Nanogenerators are tiny particles possessing piezoelectric properties. Piezoelectric materials are those that can generate electric waves when they are subjected to any mechanical stresses or vibrations. Lots of these tiny piezoelectric particles can be stacked together to create larger amount of electricity sufficient to charge your iPhone.
Zhong Lin Wang, who is working on this project has been able to attain 0.2 volts of electricity through nanogenerators. Few years down the line, we might even be living his dream. When I will be charging my cellphone with just a shake, I not only will be some electricity but also there will be no need to carry a charger and no low batteries. But I hope we wont have to keep shaking the gadget all day long to make calls.
With all the electricity that it will help to save, can this technology be an answer to energy crisis? Only time will tell.
