Google announced that its own bookstore would start selling e-books from this summer. The announcement was made by Chris Palma, manager for strategic-partner development, at an event called “The Book on Google: Is the Future of Publishing in the Cloud?”
The Google e-book store would be called Google Editions. Google Editions would be competing in the already crowded e-book market currently dominated by players like Barns and Nobel, Amazon and now Apple.
Google Editions would be available on a number of devices including devices running Android mobile operating system. Google would also be integrating its book-search service with the e-book store, allowing users to buy electronic copies of books through Google book-search results.
A number of websites would be selling books of Google Editions, including small book retailers and independent shops on a revenue sharing model. Reports suggest that Google is still deciding on weather the e-book prices would be set by independent retailers or controlled by Google. All the major e-book retailers have introduced their own e-book readers like Kindle, Nook and the iPad. Introduction of the e-book store makes the Google e-reader or Google tablet the next obvious step
