Google TV: Sony, Intel and Logitech partner with Google

Google has teamed up with Sony, Intel and Logitech to bring web software to television through set-top boxes and television sets. The service is rumored to be working on set-top boxes and would also be built-in into Sony’s television sets. While Sony is said to be working on the hardware, it would be powered by Google’s Android OS and Intel’s energy efficient Atom processors. Logitech would be developing the remote controls for the system.

Google also expects to make its open-source platform open to third party software developers to build their own plug-ins. Google TV platform would be integrating televisions with web, allowing users to browse through various web applications like Twitter and other social networking platforms. Sony is said to be working on a new television brand for Google TV. The company hopes to regain its market, which currently is being dominated by Samsung.

Intel expects to expand its market by bringing its energy efficient chips to the televisions industry. The chips currently power notebooks and netbooks. Logitech specializes in remote controls, computer speakers and other computer peripherals. Logitech would be building a remote for Google TV with a tiny keyboard integrated on it.

Google is already rumored to be testing the technology with Dish Network. Seeing the already competitive television service market, would Google be able to capture a profitable market share with its new web-plus-tv formula? Seems like another domain in the making where the titans Google and Apple might go head to head against each other. Do tell us your views in the comments section below.
