Hitachi Launches New IPS Display, Has Apple’s Retina Display Running For Cover

Apple’s retina display has been for the past year been the undisputed leader when it came to sheer resolution on a mobile screen. While there is still a debate whether Super AMOLED screens offer better viewing experience it is a fact that they are still some distance away from reaching the resolutions and pixel densities offered by IPS panels such as the one on the iPhone 4. Anyway, Hitachi has just announced that they would be starting to ship their latest IPS panel display that would be capable of a mind boggling 1280*720 pixels on a screen measuring 4.5 inches across. This translates to a juicy 329dpi pixel density – higher than that of the iPhone 4’s 326 dpi.

The display also boasts of a contrast ratio of 1100:1. The only problem is that Hitachi would only start shipping these by October 2011. This also means these would only make it to smartphones by early 2012 – a good year from now. This could also give Apple enough time to better the existing resolution on the retina display.

Also, by the time this one arrives, super AMOLED displays could sort their availability issues as well and also start to offer displays with resolutions that could possibly match IPS panels.
