The second HTC Android phone has affordability and customization written all over it. Dubbed the HTC ‘Tattoo’, this handset reveals a decent specs sheet along with hardware and software customization options.

The phone can have a more personalized outer appearance with HTC offering replaceable covers for the Tattoo. Users can either have these outer covers designed differently or  choose from an a pre-set list of styles by HTC. The Tattoo also offers seven fully customizable screens with a long range of widgets available.

“Everyone wants their own phone to feel like it was specifically made for them. The Tattoo with HTC Sense represents an easy way to shape your own distinct mobile experience and really make it your own,” said Peter Chou, chief executive at HTC.

“The HTC Tattoo ensures that you can create the most engaging and appropriate mobile experience through simple yet powerful personalisation.”

Below is the quick spec list of the HTC Tattoo

  • 2.8″ 240 x 320 full touchscreen
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
  • 3.2MP camera
  • Bluetooth
  • Wifi
  • GPS
  • MicroSD support
  • FM radio
  • Digital compass
  • Google applications including Maps, search and mail

Being a successor to the HTC Hero, the HTC Tattoo is not really an upgrade. The 528MHz Qualcomm CPU is slower than the one in HTC Hero. With a few system speed problems in the HTC Hero, a still slower processor might be deal breaker for the Tattoo. Also, the 2.8″ screen of HTC Tattoo is smaller than that of the 3.2″ screen of HTC Hero. Another interesting change here is the absence of the trackball. A circular four-way key with an enter button seems to have replaced the trackball.

A fall in spec sheet would (or should) mean an obvious fall in  prices too. Though the price may differ amongst the various countries and operators, the HTC Tattoo is rumored to be available at no cost with an 18 month contract for £25 per month. The handset will be available in Europe by the start of October 2009, followed by a launch in the rest of the world.
