Intel fined $1.45 bln

intel-euEuropean Union has ruled against Intel slapping them with a fine of $1.45 billion. The fine comes as a result of Intel’s strategy to kill the competition (i.e. AMD) by adopting illegal sale tactics.

While Intel powers over 80% of PCs across the globe, AMD is the only capable competitor. Intel offered illegal rebates to vendors for purchasing less of rival company chips or avoiding them completely; thus killing the competition illegally to strengthen its monopoly. The penalty on Intel is the highest ever charged by the EU followed by 896 million euro penalty that was awarded to Microsoft last year.

Way back in August 2007 we had seen an entire online campaign by AMD to educate consumers about Intel’s illegal practices. Guess they got what they were looking for.
