Jan 2010: High resolution iPhone 4G or the Tablet Mac?

Multiple rumors about unannounced, unseen and much desired Apple products is something we are used to. Right from the iPhone Nano last year to the multiple iPhone’s that we should have seen in 2009, there is plenty behind us already. But here is a interesting duo that is making news today. The iPhone 4th Generation and the rumored Apple Tablet. While we can be certain that the iPhone 4th Gen is surely in works, the tablet is something completely driven by rumors (since months/years).
Boy genius report today claimed that it has some concrete source telling that Apple is gearing up for a Tablet announcement in January 2010 and the device is confirmed to be sporting a 7″ display. This to an extent discards the earlier rumors of a 9.7″ screen on the Apple Tablet. This is backed by rumors that Apple has requested some premium app developers to present a full screen version of their apps, which currently run on 320×480 pixels of the iPhone / iPod touch. Joining these dots together would give you a fair idea of whats cooking at Cupertino.
The other set of rumors are more towards the iPhone 4G. The old age rumors of a LTE iPhone in testing with Verizon still stand, but this time we have a suspected date for WWDC 2010 (June last week) along with a app developer spotting the iPhone firmware 4.0 in his logs. Now slowing thinking about the news that hit us a week back about iPhone 4G going in production featuring multitasking, the iPhone firmware 4.0 makes a lot of sense. Add to this an old rumor of OmniVision providing 5MP sensors to Apple for the nextgen iPhone being renewed with a Digitimes report (Note: OmniVision already provides the camera for the 3GS).
Now here is where the doubt arises. The Google Nexus, Xperia X10, Droid and others are building pressure on the iPhone. Add to that the cool new stuff promised by Palm and Motorola at CES next month, Apple’s general refresh for the iPhone would be atleast 6 months away from the competition. It might well be the iPhone 4G and no the highly rumored Tablet that shows its face in January. 800x*** resolution for a mobile phone is now a fast becoming a trend and Apple might well showcase a high resolution iPhone 4th Generation with the new OS in January. However if I am to bet on this, it would be the tablet and not the iPhone 4G. Reason being the 10 million mark that 3GS is about to hit in the final quarter of 2009 (why would Apple break that momentum announcing the 4G early?)!
