Lava Launches Mid Range Android Smartphone; Iris 506q

Lava Mobile has launched a new mid range smartphone to its Android line-up. The newest device from their stables is called the Iris 506q. Let’s see what kind of features this one totes around and how it compares to its peers and competition.  To start with, the phone is powered by a “1.2 GHz quad core processor” (which I assume to be a mid range MediaTek chipset) and packs in 512 MB of RAM which if I may add is a tad insufficient for Android – but then if you’re going low cost, there are some trade-offs you need to make!

It runs Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and should be updatable to a few subsequent Android versions. The Iris 506q features a 5 inch QHD (540*960) display boasting of OGS (One Glass Solution) technology. The resolution is a tad on the lower side but is not something that you would immediately notice. There is a 5 megapixel camera and a VGA front camera taking care of the imaging and video calling departments respectively.

The handset is 3G enabled, has Bluetooth (v3.0) & Wi-Fi connectivity and also features Light, Proximity, Magnification and G sensor. It also supports localized services including Navigation powered by GPS/A-GPS. There is 4 GB of internal memory – expandable to 32 GB using micro SD cards. The 2000 mAH battery under the hood is powerful enough to power the phone for an entire day of nominal usage. The phone is also quite thin – at just 8.9 mm.

The Lava Iris 506q is priced at around the Rs.10,000 mark which is the expected price range for an Android phone of its capability and features list.
