LG’s L-03C 12 Megapixel Cameraphone Has 3x Optical Zoom, Xenon Flash

With camera sensors in phones reaching double digit numbers, there is not much room left to up the megapixel ante’. I for once do not see anyone amongst us using a 24 megapixel cameraphone – say in about 5 years from now. This is quite similar to the clock speed war of the early 2000?s, when Intel and AMD were in the race to make the fastest clocked CPU’s out there. That war plateaued in around 2006, soon after Intel (and later AMD) started concentrating on other ways to improve performance – and not just rely on clock speeds.

Similarly, cellphone makers would be forced to make improvements to cameraphone technology and stop relying on the megapixel hype. With 12 megapixel cameraphones already available, we are close to approaching that limit. So, just when we thought why there have been no major attempts to make a cameraphone that’s simply “better” than the current crop of devices, here comes LG with its L-03X. The rather unassumingly named device features 3x optical zoom lens from Pentax, a 12 megapixel CCD sensor,  Xenon flash, and a 720p movie recording support. The cameraphone intention of the phone is clear with its design that mimics a compact camera.

As much as you might have liked it, the phone is just a featurephone. Thats right! No Android in here. One thing you might like though is the screen resolution. All of 800*480 in a 3-inch real estate.

Before you rush out to buy one of these, let us tell you that this would be only available for lucky Japanese users on NTT DoCoMo starting January 2010. Now, all we need is a GSM version of the L-03C with a better sounding name in other parts of the world.

As cool as apps and internet browsing are.. what I really want is a phone that doubles as a genuine, useful camera… that way I’ll have a camera around all the time!

Do want. If only they’d bring it here!
