Meizu M6S Unveiled with 18:9 Display, Side-Mounted Fingerprint Reader, ~$155 Pricing

Meizu has unveiled a new mid-range smartphone called Meizu M6S. It is the company’s first phone to arrive with full screen design. Moreover, it is equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and comes with a very affordable pricing.

Design and Display

The Meizu M6S wears a metallic chassis that measures 152 x 72.5 x 8 mm and weighs 160 grams. The highlight of the M6S is that unlike other full screen design smartphones that feature rear-facing fingerprint scanner, it has the biometric recognition feature located on its right edge under a subtle notch. The handset can be availed in colors like Black, Blue, Silver and Gold.

The 5.7-inch IPS LCD In-Cell screen of the Meizu M6S is capable of delivering an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. It produces an aspect ratio of 18:9. The bottom portion of the screen where the Halo on-screen button is present features a pressure sensor chip and a vibrator motor. This on-screen button dubbed as Super mBack replaces the versatile mBack button found on other Meizu phones.

Performance and Software

The Meizu M6S is the first smartphone to feature the mid-tier Exynos 7872 chipset by Samsung. It features an hexa-core processor that includes four cores of Cortex A53 that clocks at 1.6 GHz and two cores of Cortex A73 that functions at 2.0 GHz. The M6S comes in two storage models such as 32 GB and 64 GB. Both the variants include 3 GB of RAM. The 3,000mAh battery of the phone supports 18W fast charging through USB-C.

The handset comes pre-loaded with Flyme OS 6.2, but the exact version of the Android OS is not known. The presence of OneMind AI engine enables the Meizu M6S to deliver better performance by consuming less power. Touching the Super mBack button once will allow to access the Back screen, pressing it will take users to the Home screen and the multi-tasking window can be accessed by swiping upwards on it. The Meizu M6S also features its traditional navigation bar.

Camera and Other Features

The backside of the Meizu M6S features a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor by Samsung. It is equipped with features like f/2.0 aperture, autofocus, PDAF and dual-LED flash. For snapping selfies, it features an 8-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture. Meizu claims that the side-mounted fingerprint scanner can unlock the smartphone in 0.2 seconds.

Pricing and Availability

The Meizu M6S that features 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM is priced at 999 Yuan (~$155). The higher model with 64 GB storage + 3 GB of RAM carries a pricing of 1,199 Yuan (~$186). Meizu is selling designer cases for M6S for 49 Yuan (~$7.5). However, when it is purchased with the Meizu M6S, it can be bought for 39 Yuan (~$6).

It is one of the strongest competitors for the Redmi 5 Plus, the first budget-friendly full screen design smartphone from Xiaomi. The 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM variants of the Redmi 5 Plus are respectively priced at 999 Yuan (~$155) and 1,299 Yuan (~$202) in the home country.

Starting from today, the Meizu M6S is available for buying in China through online retailing partners. From 20th January, it will be also available through offline Meizu store and other retailers. The smartphone will be also coming to other markets like India, Europe, South Africa and the Middle East.
