Mysterious Micromax Canvas A116i Appears Online: Is Identical to The Canvas HD

Folks from over at AndroidOS.in have spotted a strange little handset listed on a few e-commerce websites out there. The handset goes by the name of the Micromax Canvas A116i and is supposedly a “successor” to the Canvas HD – also known as the A116. If we are to believe the specifications of the device, there is virtually no difference between this one and the older Canvas HD when it comes to hardware. While AndroidOS.in claims that the Micromax Canvas A116i comes preloaded with Android 4.2, the specifications page on ManiacStore says that the device actually runs Android 4.1.2 with a “planned upgrade to Android 4.2 after release”. This makes it basically the same phone as the Canvas HD A116 – which only recently received the 4.2 update.

Sounds quite a fishy affair to me. Why launch a new model that is nothing but the same old phone? The only sane thing here is that Micromax is yet to announce this one officially. If the A116i is actually a new model, we would love to see the official specification that Micromax lists.

The device listed as the Micromax Canvas HD A116i gets a 5-inch 720p (70*1280 pixels). Powering the phone is the MT 6589 chipset from Mediatek that boasts of a quad core processor running at 1.2 Ghz. There is 4GB of internal memory and 1 GB RAM. The camera is the same as that on the A116 – an 8 megapixel unit coupled with the 2 MP front camera. Even the battery is the same 2000 mAh Li-ion one that is found on the A116. The A116i is available on a few e-commerce websites including eBay and ManiacStore where it has been priced at Rs. 12,090.

Those of you who are ready to risk and buy the A116 from these stores want to let us know if it really is the A116i and not the A116!
