For all those who decided to give Windows Vista a skip and stick to XP (yes I know plenty out there, including us); here is some good news. Apparently the good looking Windows 7 would come cheaper to you. Microsoft has officially confirmed that Windows XP users would be allowed a direct update to Win7.

“I can confirm that customers will be able to purchase upgrade media and an upgrade license to move from Windows XP to Windows 7 – however, they will need to do a clean installation of Windows 7,”

“This requires the user to back up their data, install Windows 7, re-install the programs and restore their data. For PCs running Windows Vista customers have the option of an in-place upgrade of Windows 7 keeping their data and programs intact or to perform a clean install of Windows 7.”

Though this would require a clean install the good part is that you would probably shell out lesser $$ for Windows 7. Also revealed some time back was that Windows 7 would come in six different packs (Windows 7 Starter Edition, Home Basic, Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate).

I have been running Win XP Pro exclusively for eight years now. Rock solid on all eight of my families systems! About a year ago I purchased Vista and dual booted my PC with Vista and XP on separate hdd’s. It wasn’t till Vista SP2 till Vista was somewhat reliable and I rarely used it awaiting the release of Windows 7.
I participated in the Win 7 beta program for the last four months and it seemed to run great. So great that I shelled out over $300 for the retail release of Win 7. I’ve had nothing but problems since. I have a Microsoft Mouse connected to my computer and the Microsoft Win 7 wouldn’t sleep till I installed current drivers from Microsoft, after that it would go to sleep. Now the problem is that about a minute after that the computer freezes. I’ve spent about 20hrs trying many different solutions to this problem. There are countless others posting of this exact problem going back eight months when the beta testing began and Microsoft still has no answer. I am back to using XP till they come out with a Service Pack that cures this ill. Win 7 shouldn’t have been released till this and other issues were solved. For my money it seams Microsoft has released another flop of Vista with a new name.
I really liked Win 7, can’t wait till it’s fixed. Till then XP is Kick Ass and far better in reliability than any of Microsoft’s subsequent releases. The Vista and Win 7 boxes do look good on my office shelve. My XP box sits right on my desk for all to see what I endorse.
