Microsofts latest attempt at search market: BING
May 30th, 2009 by Kunal
Microsoft announced its search engine named Bing. Microsoft believes that the search engine would help its users in decision making. According to Microsoft, existing search engines like Yahoo and Google only provide information about what they search. Bing, on the other hand, would guide users on how to use that information.
Going live on 3rd June, Bing would initially help its users in making decision about making a purchase, planning trip, health research and local business search.
“Bing is an important first step forward in our long term effort to deliver innovations in search that enable people to find information quickly and use the information… (to) make smart decisions”, said Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO. About the interesting name, he said “The name is short, it’s easy to say, it works globally”.
Microsoft’s earlier tries on search like MSN search and Live Search have not been much of success. There have been many other search innovators who have tried and burned their hands again the search giant Google. With a $100 million promotional campaign, Microsoft looks like betting big on Bing. With Google’s 80.00%++ market share in online search, Bing would have to be drastically innovative to make its mark.
‘Google’ has established itself as a synonym for ‘Search’, would this decision support search really make users to divert to Bing? Many competitors for Google like Cuil and Search Wikia have failed to dent its market share, recent launches like Wolfram have a completely different approach are looking good and Bing will be put to test very soon!
Annkur adds: Microsoft recently unveiled its new technology Browserank. Not sure if that is what Bing uses extensively but looks interesting to me.
