Mobile Number Portability coming to India by year-end

TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has announced the final date for implementation of number potability for mobile subscribers in India. From 31st December 2009, cellphone users in the country will be able to jump operators without changing their mobile numbers. The best part is that one can shift operators regardless of the mobile technology (i.e. GSM or CDMA).
This service will be implemented within Metro cities and Category ‘A’ telecom circles first (i.e. on 31st December) and the rest of India by 20th March 2010. The carriers will now be under added pressure to serve customers properly and retain their subscriber base. This might also kick off another era of telecom wars in India. The last revolution in this industry was with the entry of Reliance into the mobile phone space.
The process of jumping operators is said to take a maximum of 4 days, with some porting charges being applicable with each shift. One can change operators only once in 90 days according to TRAI regulations.
Looks like I’m certainly going to remember that day as the day when my prayers were answered by TRAI
