Motorola Droid coming to Verizon on Nov. 6

Everytime an overpriced touchscreen cellphone is announced, it instantly gets the title of an “iPhone killer”. Of course none of them have managed to come close to fulfilling the title. We are not trying to follow the trend here, but the latest handset to be released by Motorola is one that can quite possibly be an ‘Iphone Killer’. The phone we are talking about is the Motorola Droid!
The Motorola Droid is coming to Verizon Wireless on Nov 6th. The Droid is going to be the first handset that features the Android 2.0 OS. The launch date has been officially announced by the U.S. wireless carrier.
“This is an exciting announcement for Verizon Wireless, as the Droid by Motorola is the first device that we are bringing to market under our ground-breaking strategic partnership with Google,” said John Stratton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. “Droid by Motorola gives customers a lifestyle device with access to more than 12,000 applications that will help them stay in touch, up to date and entertained, using the best 3G network in the country.”
Below are the key features of the Droid:
- 3.7“, 480 x 854, TFT capacitive touchscreen
- Android OS, V2.0
- GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

- Accelerometer sensor
- Full QWERTY keyboard with 5-way navigation key
- 16GB internal memory further expandable through microSD
- Wi-Fi 802.11
- Bluetooth, V2.0 with A2DP
- microUSB v2.0
- 5 MP, 2592 x 1944 pixels, autofocus, dual-LED flash
- ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz processor
- A-GPS support, Google Maps Navigation
- 3.5 mm audio jack
“We’re proud to work with Verizon Wireless and Google on the first smartphone to feature Android 2.0,” said Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive officer of Motorola and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobile Devices.
Motorola is targeting the iPhone with a full force campaign focusing on ‘what Android can do and what the iPhone can’t’. Like touting ‘iDon’t have a real keyboard’ and ‘iDon’t run simultaneous apps’.
As if having Android 2.0 OS was not enough, Google also announced the release of the rumored Google Maps Navigation application today. So, Motorola Droid would also be the first handset that features the free voice-guided navigation application. “Unlike most navigation systems, Google Maps Navigation was built from the ground up to take advantage of your phone’s Internet connection,” the company said.
The Google Maps Navigation features live traffic updates, Google Maps view and Google Street view. The application will also feature voice input when the device is docked.
