Astronomy junkies can now check out the wonders of space right from their smartphones with the newest mobile app, courtesy NASA (that’s the ‘National Aeronautics and Space Administration’ for all ye ignora-mooses :) iPhone and iPod touch users can download this app that allows users to dig for “information, videos, images and news updates about NASA missions”.

The NASA app gives users access to facts and figures in a variety of formats. Twitter addicts can find and add the agency’s many Twitter feeds, and those who like to be kept informed about space-related curtain raisers can have fun with the NASA countdown clocks. Users can even keep track of the International Space Station and other spacecraft that are currently orbiting the Earth! The experience of viewing all of these updates, videos, and images is really enhanced with the iPhone and iPod touch’s multi-touch user interface.

Gary Martin, director of the New Ventures and Communications Directorate at Ames, adds: “The NASA App provides an easy and interesting way for the public to experience space exploration.”

The NASA app is currently available for free from the Apple App Store. For more information on NASA’s iPhone application, visit this NASA page, which also includes the handy app download link.
