China based NationalChip launches new range of Set Top Box Chips in India

NationalChip, an IC manufacturer based in Hangzhou, China, has launched a new range of chips for use in Set Top Boxes in the Indian market. The company has some lofty goals, and aim to reach around 130 million customers in India by 2020. They are promising a faster and more enhanced user experience throughout their range and hopes it would be enough to drive discerning buyers towards them.

The GX3201

NationalChip’s top of the line model is the GX3201. It includes support for decoding 1080p content, along with enhanced security features. They claim that the CPU over 1000MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) of performance.

The GX3001R and GX3012Q

The GX3001R and GX3012Q are the lower end models in NationalChip’s portfolio. The company claims that they are highly cost efficient and also come with compatibility for advanced security implementations required by most vendors.

Commenting on the launch, Mr. Patrick Dou, Vice President of NationalChip said “As Indian STB makers are building up local manufacturing capability in India, NationalChip is also enhancing local support capability through cooperation with local partners. We have a leading product lineup, turnkey solutions, track record and technical capability to support sustainable development of the Indian market and its customers. We hope to be well received.”

All said, it should be noted that these are not direct to consumer products and NationalChip would have to tie up with local players for it to be able to percolate to the end user. How it manages to do that would be an interesting thing to watch.
