No, Apple is not buying Sony

Yes, the rumors are going wild and they had to. Afterall its Apple and Sony named here. And yet again in less than a week I am amazed by the kind of traction ‘made up’ news gets. The only thing that seems to be pushing this sort of a rumor is the market cap of Sony which is said to be $34 billion that is < Apple’s cash at bank of $51 billion. There is no way Apple would spend a bulk of its cash balance on acquiring a Windows PC maker (though they have the word expensive in common with Apple), a PSP maker who’s offering isn’t doing much against the iPod touch, a PMP manufacturer who isn’t half as popular as the iPod and does a barely profitable (and Android / Windows Phone 7 powered) cellphone JV with Ericsson.

On some other day I would have really sat down, listed all the points in favor of a Apple+Sony that we are hearing and shot down the basis of the very rumor. But here is all I have to say – ‘Apple is not buying out Sony’. For all those having your eyes wide open about the possibility – sorry! Tell me that they are building their own gaming console or buying out Nintendo for once, I might give it a though.
