Nokia exiting Wimax technology? Is Wimax Dying?
January 15th, 2009 by Annkur
Wimax technology was believed to be the most promosing wireless internet technology untill last year. For many it still is, but …
Things aren’t flowing very smooth for wimax companies and media reports are strongly claiming that Wimax is on death bed with companies loosing billions in investment money. While we did hear last year about Wimax being called a DISASTER by Garth Freeman, CEO of Buzz Broadband (Australia); many were still bullish on the same. Nokia and Intel are the two early adopters of the technology. However Nokia has discontinued its N810 wimax enabled handheld suggesting its (temporary) exit from the Wimax space. Things might well change soon!
On the other hand Intel who has invested over $1billion on Wimax technology assures that it is still committed and sees future in it. While Wimax has worked well in India for wirless broadband (with a fixed antenna), the real test of the technology would be when Notebooks and other gadgets with integrated Wimax start to show up in the first half of 2009.
“Economic conditions notwithstanding, we still believe in WiMax and think it is the preferred 4G solution,” Julie Coppernoll, director of marketing for the WiMax Program Office at Intel.
So if you put that million dollar question to me, Is WiFi Dying? I would say “Its preparing to explode, forget dying”
