Nokia puts up a fight against Chinese handsets; Reminds of National Security
November 23rd, 2008 by Annkur
Cheap unbranded Chinese handsets are a big hit in India. In a highly competitive mobile market with razor thin margins; most small retailers have either stopped or significantly reduced trading in branded handsets in favor of these Imported ones (also check ebay). These Chinese handset designers are clever and understand their target market very well; Firstly they work on the quantity principle instead of quality and secondly they are priced less than half the Nokia’s and SE’s! Also not to forget some of them copying popular Nokia designs/tunes and also offering WM logos on bootup.
After trying numerous raids and checks on importers and wholesalers of replicas and unbranded handsets, today morning I noticed a big Nokia AD on Mumbai Mirror scaring of people from using these unbranded Chinese handsets in the interest of National Security, YES! Apparently these unbranded devices do not have a IMEI number and thus cannot be traced by the ATS in case of any terrorist activity.
