OG Review: LG Cookie KP500

January 6th, 2009 by Annkur

The highly promoted LG touchscreen has hit the markets with an aggressive pricing. The Cookie (KP 500) for me is an update to the previous attempt to cash in on the Touch hype – “Prada”. While the LG Prada was an early attempt, the Cookie is much more impressive.

The touchscreen is not as bright and rich as the iPhone but comparing the KP500 to the Apple iPhone would be wrong. Firstly the iPhone is iPhone and secondly the KP500 is targeted at a different level altogether. While the iPhone would cost you anywhere around Rs 28000 – Rs 30000 (8GB) in India the KP500 is all yours for Rs 13000/- approx!

For me the KP500 means serious competition to the Nokia 5800 that has just hit the markets. Priced at approx Rs 20000 the 5800 is believed to be Nokia’s iPhone. Again the mention of iPhone comes in! However the KP500 from LG has managed to create a decent hype. Extensive television promos has put the name Cookie onto peoples mind.

Extremely light weight at 89g and handy Cookie is smaller than the iPhone and fits comfortably in your palm. The device has genuine touch features with scrolling of pictures using swipe gestures like the iPhone  (and yes it works well), though the Zoom is using on screen virtual buttons labeled ‘+’ and ‘-’. The widgets on the home screen are amusing. Drag and drop them just as seen in the commercial.

Though we just had a few minutes with the Cookie the handset is sleek and comfortable. The design is much better than the Prada. The first thing that I noticed is the plastic buttons instead of the rusty :P metal ones on the Prada. The UI is much smoother and fast.

Features (Specifications):

  • 3 megapixel camera with 2x digital zoom (Video supported)
  • 3″ TFT LCD, 262k colours, 240 x 400 pixels
  • Handwriting recognition (Stylus operation)
  • Music player (MP3/AAC/AAC+/AAC++/WMA formats) with FM
  • Document viewer (TXT, PDF, DOC, PPT, XLS)
  • Ringtones: 64 voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
  • Java 2.0 games
  • Phonebook (1000 names)
  • Memory: 48 Mbytes plus microSD memory card slot (up to 8GB)
  • Connectivity: USB 2.0, Bluetooth
  • Internet: WAP 2.0, GPRS, EDGE, web browser
  • Vibration alert
  • Quad band
  • Size: 107 x 55 x 12 mm
  • Talktime: 3.5 hours
  • Battery standby: 350 hours

Thumbs Up:

Good upgrade to Prada, nice option for first time touchscreen adopters. Pricing!, UI – The cookie UI and customization is good. And if I again compare the iPhone – You can forward SMS, Send receive files via Bluetooth etc etc. A good option.

Thumbs Down:

The camera quality looks average with poor zoom and no Flash (Though I mention missing Flash, I don’t believe the Flash is a very important addon in mobiles – Unless its a really powerful one , which  we haven’t witnessed much). The touchscreen though improved won’t impress an iPhone or a HTC user. The flip opening for the charger / music port is a design flaw (IMO) and should be eliminated. And did I forget to mention the missing WiFi.

Verdict:

LG is not the most preferred brand for cellphone users. With no great history of providing quality mobiles and poor resale value (compared to Nokia), LG hopes to sell the Cookie at a value point. The aggressive pricing with rich features is what will drive the sales. Another thing that helps would be the iPhone wannabes looking for a cheap touchscreen :)
