OG Review: Wynncom Y50

SAR Group’s Wynncom had launched its 7 dual-sim phones a few weeks back and made an entry in an already competitive Indian mobile phone market. Saif Ali Khan being the Brand Ambassador, unveiled these handsets. We have Wyncomm Y50 here with us for review. Y50 is the Blackberry inspired offering by Wynncom (well every other manufacturer has its flagship product inspired by the BlackBerry) and is very similar to the Videocon V1675 we saw earlier. Yes! a proper chinese phone with brand name, Blackberry UI and compatibility for a Nokia power charger. While what we call a chinese phone is subjective with most popular brands getting their manufacturing done in China, here is your guide to buying a chinese phone.

So here is a quick look at the Wynncom Y50

1) Design: Wyncomm’s Y50 design is an inspiration from RIM’s BlackBerry. The entire back portion is a plastic built and though the front portion gives a feeling of metal, it is a plastic!.We liked the phone’s built as compared to Micromax Q7. Gives a feeling of holding a BlackBerry(believe me, it does!). Moving on to the keypad, the QWERTY is much better than what we expected. Each key is specifically rounded for a good and fast typing experience. There is an addition of up, down, right and left arrow keys on the keypad(to which I found no use other than an alternative to trackball for navigation on the interface :P).  The trackball navigation adds on to the Y50’s design. The trackball navigation isn’t smooth as you may expect it to be, but does the job given the price tag.

2) Multimedia: Let’s talk about music first. Music is not up to the mark when it plays on the speakers and the earphones disappoint even more! But still it carries a 3.5mm audio jack, so you can try your luck with other earphones. Coming to camera. The 2MP camera is kind of okay in terms of clicking a pic or for shooting a video clip. The image quality is average, you sure can’t expect anything magical here. The video cannot be taken with a full screen mode, but the video playback can take place at a full screen. Gives a basic multimedia feel…

3) Features: Wynncom’s Y50 comes with a dual sim & a mobile tracker system integrated (not tested by us). Its got a scheduled FM recording feature. Comes with integrated facebook, twitter, nimbuzz messenger. For a better internet experience, you can try Opera Mini 5. Well it lacks multitasking, so when you play music you can’t think of doing anything else with the device. Talking about the OS now. Its pretty much a chinese OS (trying to mimic BlackBerry’s icons and homescreen!) with an Indian brand labeled on it. Overall, the phone gives an exact feeling like what we handled Videocon V1675.

4) Memory: It comes with an internal memory of 81MB. It can be expanded using MicroSD cards.

Final Words:

If you are looking to buy a phone which has all features and which looks like a smartphone (this one isn’t) yet cheap then this could be your choice. It comes for approx. 5500INR and be sure that there is no certification like FCC for this. We do not believe in such products as they are untested. uncertified and we just don’t know what kind of radiation tests they have been through.

But before jumping to any conclusion do give an eye to these:

Btw: Anyone else feels the name Wynncom is inspired by a numerologist? (Just like our editor 😛 )
