(Updated) Nokia surprises (impresses?) all with a ‘mini laptop’ aka netbook

August 25th, 2009 by Annkur

booklet 3g

Just days after we digested the Nokia N900 that was considered to be its portable internet tablet, here comes Nokia’s official netbook entry. Rumors of a Nokia netbook were going around since long, but we didn’t expect it to come out with something full fledged so soon. Booklet 3G as they term it, this mini laptop looks a little more empowered than your regular netbook and has a 10.1″ display and Windows OS (rumored to be Windows 7). Nokia has just released a teaser (video below) for us to drool over without revealing specifications in particular. However the device looks good, full featured (yeah HDMI, GPS, 3G etc) and compact enough. Loads of Nokia customizations / integration can also be expected.

booklet 3g2

The most exciting part such as the pricing and availability isn’t revealed, it might well hit the streets sometime in October-December to encash the holiday season along with the Windows 7 official launch. This is one netbook that I would certainly consider, but only if it can match the pricing. Something below $500 would be great! (video downstairs)

thinkgeek_usb_cellphone_booster

Do you have a poor signal strength in your office, home, meeting rooms, and other places like that? And you always wonder why dosent the cell phone company do something for you? Or are they even concerned?

Well, looks like ThinkGeek is concerned. And they have come up with this amazing USB Cellphone booster. Just plug it in your laptop’s USB port and place the antenna anywhere in a range of 15 feet. The antenna will boost the signals by 2-3 bars in all the cellphones within 5ft of range. The antenna takes its power from the USB port, so no need for charging and problems of low battery and other issues. For $99.99 you need atleast one bar of signal on your cell phone.
ThinkGeek believes that you cant boost something out of nothing.

Xbox price cut coming soon to counter PS3 slim

August 22nd, 2009 by Annkur

walmart ad

Sony recently announced the PS3 slim along with a price cut for the classic version of the PlayStation 3. This leaves the Xbox 360 ‘Elite’ as the most expensive gaming console in the market along with with some increased competition from the Sony PS3 for Microsoft to handle. However it is being rumored that Microsoft already had plans to reduce the pricing for Xbox 360, but the announcement is being delayed to allow the PS3 Slim hype to settle down.

A leaked Walmart ad has confirmed a $299 Xbox Elite in pipeline (the current price is $399). This would bring the Xbox pricing at par with the upcoming PS3. While the companies play price war, you know who benefits ;)

James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ to take 3D cinema beyond imagination!

August 19th, 2009 by Tassavur

avatarAfter being in production for more than 10 years, ‘Avatar’ would officially hit the cinemas this December. Apparently the making of the movie has brought about a whole new 3D ‘Fusion Camera System’ into existence. In what is being termed as a ‘ground breaking’ technology for the future of film making, the Fusion Camera System or the Reality Camera System was developed jointly by the Titanic Director James Cameron and Vince Pace. The lack of special effect technology in the early 90′s forced Cameron to delay the project and this certainly leaves us excited about what we shall see when Avatar hits the theaters on December 18th!

The film follows the central character “Jake” to the distant planet of Pandora where he hopes to join the ‘Avatar’ programme and replace his disabled body. Avatar is a mega project with an investment of £123m. Such ventures puts cinemas across the globe under pressure to update their projection systems to stay relevant in the future of 3D cinema.

A few lucky OnlyGizmos readers can join me for an exclusive India preview of Avatar in Mumbai / Chennai. Just drop a comment if interested and I shall revert back with the details.

Wi-Fire USB WiFi adapter reviewed

August 19th, 2009 by Annkur

wifire-4

Wi-Fire is a nice geeky USB WiFi adapter that I have been testing for a week or so now. It works flawlessly with my WinXP based desktop and my Acer notebook powered by WinVista. And the good thing for many techies is the Linux compatibility.

Wi-Fire certainly performs better than my old D-Link DW-G122 adapter as well as my internal WiFi adapter on the Acer. The installation process is simple and you can easily configure this thing in minutes. Wi-Fire has a very innovative design taking a different approach than the standard USB sticks that we see. WiFire can cling to your LCD monitor or any other location pretty easily and you just need to rotate the antenna to optimize the WiFi range. The connection to the system takes place with the help of a mini USB cable.

wifire-review

For me the Wi-Fire improves the WiFi connectivity by 20-30% (thats like doubling the range available at times) with three wireless routers being shared around my neighbourhood. Since I use a desktop for regular work, I really don’t mind using the WiFire as it hangs around on unused airspace on my table, however if you plan to use this with a notebook, be sure you are adding a not so small accessory to your bag.  WiFire is priced at $59. (More images after the jump)

Bluetooth file transfer app comes to the iPhone via App Store

August 19th, 2009 by Annkur

bluetooth-p2p

A free App Store app brings to you one of the most wanted features on the iPhone / iPod touch. ‘Bluetooth Photo Share’ lets you transfer images between any two iPhone’s or iPod touch (2nd generation) using bluetooth. Currently all data sharing apps on the AppStore that lets you transfer a file between two iTouch’s requires WiFi or 3G connection, however this FREE app does the trick using Bluetooth.

The iPhone OS 3.0 allowed usage of Bluetooth for multi-player gaming, but file transfer was never discussed. One of the major downers for the iPhone in all our reviews has been the lack of Bluetooth file transfer and USB mass storage mode. Though this app does not allow you to transfer audio files or other documents, its a good feature to have at least for image sharing. If only now Apple lets it talk to other smartphones, or probably we are wishing for a little too much :)

Update: Just to clarify, we have heard of iBluetooth for Jailbroken iPhones. But the app never got the updates to accommodate many features that the developer had promised. Doubt if anyone enjoys that and nevertheless Bluetooth Photo Share is official!

Playstation 3 Slim confirmed by Sony

August 18th, 2009 by Annkur

ps3 slim

Sony has confirmed the existence of a Slimmer version of its latest gaming console, the Playstation 3 (PS3). The rumors of a PS3 Slim is being heard of since a long time, however its only now that the 120GB Slim Playstation 3 has been confirmed for an September launch. PS3 loses 36% weight and 1/3rd of its volume (32% smaller) in the slimmer version. This comes without compromising the features like inbuilt Blu-ray and WiFi.

The 120GB PS3 slim would cost $299 (and hit the stores in first week of September) while the regular 80GB PS3 shall cost $299 from tomorrow today (and might well be discontinued after the Slim version goes mainstream). Sony has managed to reduce the manufacturing cost of the PS3 by 70%, and would hope to better compete with the Microsoft’s Xbox and the Nintendo Wii.

Corsair introduces the world’s fastest 128GB flashdrive

August 15th, 2009 by Kunal

flash_voyager_gt

Corsair has launched what it claims to be the world’s fastest USB flashdrive. The Flash Voyager GT, as it is called, is a 128GB high capacity USB flash drive.

Flash Voyager GT can read at the top speed of 32Mbps and has the writing speed of upto 25.6Mbps which is almost the speed limit of the USB 2.0 bus. Even with the high data holding capacity, the flash drive is 75% smaller than regular flashdrives of less than half the capacity.

“High performance is a key requirement for super-high capacity flash drives, such as the 128GB Voyager GT, simply because it is able to store such a large volume of data,”says John Beekley, VP of Applications at Corsair. “The 128GB Voyager GT is nearly twice as fast as other high-capacity flash drives, which means less time waiting for your music, video, or office files to copy to and from the drive.”

The other flashdrives of 128GB capacity available in the market are Kingston’s DataTraveler and DiscGo. The Flash Voyager GT costs $400. Too much? well its currently the cheapest 128GB flashdrive available :P
