Palm makes the ‘Pixi’ official

While HTC has its Android-powered Tattoo taking on the smartphone market with the latest OS under the affordable ‘good enough tech’ category, Palm has announced the “Pixi”, which runs the WebOS, offering the ultimate in quality and yet aiming to cater to the lower segment of the market.
Just as rumored, the Palm Pixi (codenamed Eos) will go on sale before 2009 is out. The Pixi handset has a candybar design that features a full QWERTY keypad along with a ultra slim body. The device also features 8GB of memory, 2MP camera with flash, a 2.63″ (320×400) touchscreen and native apps for Facebook, LinkedIn and the like. The Pixi is real slim, at 0.43-inches (just for the record, the iPhone 3GS is at 0.48″) and also gives a 3.5″ stereo output.
My only complaint with the device is the lack of WiFi. On the other hand, the capacitive touchscreen is suitably a plus point. While HTC claimed that the 2.8″ screen on the Tattoo is too small for a capacitive touchscreen, Palm manages the same – and brilliantly – with the 2.63″ screen on the Pixi. No pricing estimates yet, but I won’t be surprised if this becomes available for free or US$75, considering that the Palm Pre is now just US$149.
p.s. the previous specs leak mentioned AGPS and Video recording. We are yet to confirm if these have made it to the official Pixi feature lineup.
