Review: Sony Ericsson MS500 Wireless Speaker
November 20th, 2009 by Annkur

Sony Ericsson is rolling out some extremely cool accessories (wish the cellphones were equally good) and after the fantastic IS800 Bluetooth headset, we now have our hands on the MS500.
SE MS500 is a 2 watt, Bluetooth 2.1 wireless speaker that promises easy listening to music on the go. We tested this with a range of devices and it connected with all of them flawlessly, but the sad part is that the iPhone or any Nokia won’t be the right companion to this. You need a Sony Ericsson device to get the most out of this. Using a N72 or Nokia 6700 gives lesser audio output than the integrated speakers on the Nokia. The MS500 lacks volume controls just like the IS800 Bluetooth headset, and you need to control the volume from the mobile. This is probably why my Nokia fails to work with this
. The design is pretty neat with a splash-proof (no I haven’t put it through the water test yet) body and single button operation.
However, when connecting with a good Sony Ericsson Walkman handset – like W595 – to this and we were amazed by the quality of the output. Not very loud, but good enough for small group sitting at a coffee shop or a quiet room. I really doubt if this will work (even with a SE handset) when I am out on the bike or cycling. The range/reception is also pretty neat, with the speaker playing audio flawlessly even when the device is in another (closed) room.
The battery life is promised at around 5 hours, and I am still testing out the battery life (shall update soon) in our test the standard batteries shipped with the MS500 gave around 3.05hrs of music at full volume playing from a Sony Ericsson W595. The good part is that the rechargeable batteries from my Canon can be used with this. I am sure many of us would love this extra bit of utility, but do we really need a portable speaker that won’t even connect to our iPods?
