Apple’s AirPlay allows streaming media from Apple devices to TVs (audio to 3rd party speakers as of now). Now, according to the unnamed sources of Bloomberg, Apple is planning to expand this service for video streaming to third-party devices. The service currently supports video streaming only via Apple TV.
The rumor says that Apple would licence its AirPlay technology to TV manufacturers and AirPlay ready TVs could be available as soon as the year end. Added features like AirPlay video streaming would allow Apple to make its products more compelling to customers. This is a shift from what Apple promised with FaceTime (to make it an open standard) and the question remains, will the TV manufacturers adopt AirPlay against DLNA?
