Rumor roundup: Apple iPods with camera

It’s a very strange feeling for me to say now that within days hours we’ll be able to (in all probability) drool over the new iPods from Apple, and that too with cameras! We have had continuous rumors and live pictures (leaked) over the past few weeks of the upcoming iPod nano and iPod touch sporting a camera. While I had early on discarded these rumors, the persistence of the rumors has now forced me to reconsider the camera iPods (or maybe I have been right all along and the camera iPods will do a no-show tomorrow).
Pictures of leaked accessories from unheard manufacturers in China and around Asia have been common for unreleased Apple products. We have also seen these turn out to be nothing more than publicity stunts for these manufacturing cos (remember the iPhone Nano rumors?). The same can be applied to the iPod nano and iPod touch. The rumors started with silicon / plastic cases sporting a camera field and microphone slot, and we at OnlyGizmos took every bit of the gossip with several pinches of salt. The early rumors were followed by more leaked cases (live pictures and digital ones) and some pricing estimates for the iPod touch 3rd Generation and the iPod nano 5th generation.
Interestingly according to the rumors, the iPod nano might feature a 32GB version and the iPod touch is to get a bump to 64GB. At this point, I still maintain that Apple is likely to differentiate the iPhone from the iPod touch to some extent, so that the touch remains more of an iPod for music and gaming purposes, and the iPhone remains a top-of-the-line smartphone.
However some live pictures of an iPod touch with a camera appeared shortly after and were followed by some better shots and a video! These appeared to be previously-used prototypes and suggested pretty strongly that the camera Mp3 players from Apple are coming this year.
Recently Engadget got their hands on HAMA 3G iPod touch cases and 5G Nano cases with a camera slot. This was at the IFA 2009 in Berlin. Though OG cannot be 100% certain about how true it is, the ‘”camera angle” sure looks convincing given the consistency in the rumors (same camera placement).
While we also saw strong rumors for an Apple tablet / netbook, we’re gonna leave that aside as a rumor, which actually has been making the rounds for years now. Let’s wait for an actual announcement by the man himself and look forward to the camera iPods for now
