Samsung Announces the Galaxy Round Smartphone With Curved Display

The rumors were true! We have been talking on and on for days about the imminent arrival of a handset from Samsung with a curved display. Earlier today, Samsung officially took wraps off this hitherto mythical handset. They have chosen to call it the Galaxy Round. The Galaxy Round looks quite like the recently launched Galaxy Note 3 and even seems to have almost the same feature set. Now, if you are looking at the image of the phone and observe that the curve on the display is barely noticeable, let us tell you that this is the way it is supposed to be ( and not a curved, bendable display you were probably hoping to see)

The display is “curved” in that it gets a recessed in the middle. More like a concave surface. This causes the display to curve along the vertical axis of the phone. Samsung claims that this curve will let the phone fit the contours of a human face whilst calling the “normal” way. This same curvature will also according to Samsung help uses control their apps and more easily. This is what Samsung had to say about the phone in a  press release announcing the device:

“As a result of its unique curved design, users can take advantage of round integration experiences like the Roll Effect that enables user to check information such as date, time, missed call and battery easily when home screen is off, and the Gravity Effect for creating visual interaction with the screen by tilting the device. When the Galaxy Round’s display is off while the music player is running, a short press to the left of the device will play the previous track while a short press to the right will play the next track. For pictures and videos, the Side Mirror feature enables users to gain access to list of the album content with a left and right tilt.”

As for the specifications, this one will feature a 5.7-inch 1080p  Super AMOLED display. At 7.9mm thick and weighing 154g, this is quite lean as well for its size. There is a 2.3 Ghz  quad core chip doing the number crunching with 3 Gb of RAM. The phone will run Android 4.3 at launch and will also sport a  13-megapixel camera.Topping things off is the 2800mAh battery.

The sad bit? This one is not expected to make it out of South Korea.

So, was that an underwhelming launch? Were you expecting something more spectacular from Samsung? That said, Samsung’s co-competitor LG too is expected to come up with something like this soon – so you may see another exciting product from one of these companies in the next few months.
