[India] Samsung releases Galaxy Tab, Ships Nov 10th, Costs Rs 38000 ($826)

Samsung Galaxy Tab, India Launch

As expected the Samsung Galaxy Tab has formally arrived in India (yes amongst the first 3 countries getting the Tab). The device which many have hailed as the foremost challenger to Apple’s iconic iPad tablet, will be available from November 10th for a price of Rs 38000 (USD 826 approx).

While the Galaxy Tab does not have as large a display as the iPad – 7 inches against 9.7 inches – it compares very favourably in other departments, with a host of connectivity options (including 3G and Wi-Fi), a 1 GHz processor, the latest version of Android (2.2) and best of all, two cameras to enable video calling. Top this off with a svelte shape and a mere 385 gms weight and you can see why so many tech pundits (some of us included) are enthralled by it.

Whether, this will be enough to take on the iPad we know not as of now, but what we can say for sure is that in terms of sheer specs, the Galaxy Tab is easily the best in the Indian market, at least until the Dell Streak gets its FroYo update, which is expected on November 6th (yes just 4 days before the Tab arrives). The tablet wars have well and truly arrived in India, even though the tablet that started it all – the Apple iPad itself – has not. May the best tab win.

Another interesting bit is that carriers like Reliance would be announcing plans for the Tab around November 10th; would this for the first time bring subsidized hardware to India? Or as it’s more likely just customized voice+data plans for the Galaxy Tab.

Yes, we are scouting for a review unit – wait and watch.

  • INR 38000/- for a Galaxy Tab
    INR 30000/- for Dell Streak
    INR 42000/- for Apple IPad

WHY is India SO COSTLY To live in???

The Galazy Tab cost @ 600 USD (@27000 INR) in US
    The Dell Streak Cost @ 500 USD (@ 23000INR ) in US
The Apple IPAD Cost @ 500 USD (@ 23000 INR) in US

THIS IS UNFAIR. Either they are promoting GREY Market OR keeping Warranty Costs very high.

Shipping ALL the PADs (Most of them are “Made in China” right!) should be cheapest to India.

  • A little correction, the iPad base model is around 30-32k in grey market. Adding taxes the iPad 16GB WiFi sells for $530 in US which is Rs 24380. If they launch officially here it should retail for 28000 – 29000. Guess Steve Jobs was right, the competition has massive issues competing with the price.

And yes even the iPad is shipping from China, so technically the shipping should be less to India. Not sure about taxes, the cellphone taxes are low, computers are high AFAIK.

    Thanks Alap / Ashfame
