Samsung introduces “Blue Earth” handset made from plastic waste

Samsung has found a novel solution for all those water bottles that we through away after use. The company has recycled the waste plastic to make its environment friendly phone – Samsung Blue Earth. We gave a glimpse of the phone back in Feb during the MWC ‘09.
While the “Blue Earth” is made of plastic waste, it is free from toxic materials like bromine-based flame retardants, PVC and phthalate esters. The phone also charges using solar energy via the solar panel that is located on the back panel.
The Samsung Blue Earth phone also packs in some environment-friendly applications that would involve some environment friendly acts from its users. One of these is the pedometer application that tells you how many trees you have saved by choosing to walk. Other applications include Eco-Walk, Eco- Calendar and Eco-Tips.
One interesting feature of the phone is the Eco-Mode, which is an automatic setting for energy efficiency. Here the user can control the screen brightness, backlight duration and bluetooth at the touch of a button. The phone’s environmental friendliness extends to its packaging as well, which is made of a recyclable material and printed with soy ink.
With all of this, the phone also has something to give to its users. It features a 3” capacitive touchscreen, 3.2 MP camera, microSD support upto 16GB and connectivity options that include USB, WiFi and Bluetooth. Overall, Blue Earth is an environment-friendly phone that is packed with some decent features. The phone would appeal to those who are both environment conscious and would look only for the basic functionalities in a phone.
Blue Earth will first be available in Sweden by the end of October 2009. It should then be introduced to the rest of the world. No news is available yet on pricing.
